la the contest for the Ik-publican Con
gressional Conv nlion, Cairo ws stabbed
in the back by h r own citizens, the resi
dent members of the committee. While
The Bi'LLtrc.s did all it could to get the
committee 'o d-cile u,rioii Ciiro, going
even 8" far as to offer the free use of the
Optra II'.usj without consulting the direc
tors or the miniver of tliat institution, the
members ol the committee vo'ed against
Cairo with aggravating regularity. Car
bond !e was chosen by a majority ol only
onj vte, an 1 Cairo was defetted by the
apparent cowardice of the proxy from Pu
laski County and the painfully excessive
"patriotism" of the C'liro m -rabers of the
committee. I hat Cairo was toe mo-t con-
vrrii mt pl.ice n the district is a nutter
about which there cm be no dispute a
self-tvi ent pr.p ition. Thtt it is very
much superior to Carbon lale, in point of
conveniences for the convention and ea?e of
approach from ad pa ts of the district, is a
pilptbla fact. Carbmd ile can be reached
by the 'leieates from h tit" the counties in
the districts, only from Ciiro; consequently
the delegations to the Congressional Con
vention from Johns n, Pulaski, Pope, Mis-
sac an I Alexander Counties, wiil all have
to come to Ciiro before they can reach
Carb uida'.e, and will be put to more than
double expense in attending the conven
tions than would have been
t'ie cise had Cairo been
selected, i n account of which some delega
tes will probably not attend at all. Hut all
these plain advantages of Cairo over Car
bondale or any other point in the district,
were ignored, as stated Cairo was defeat
ed, and mean cowardice and factional
hatred, miscalled "party patriotism," pre
vailed against us. Just before tne subject
of seleciug the place for the meeting came
up, the proxy for the member from Pulas
ki County left. Pulaski was in fevor of
Cairo as the place, but her representative
was spirited away before she could make
her influeuce felt in this important matter.
Gut Cairo would yet have been Belected
had her own citizens on the committee beeu
truo to her. She would have been selected
by a m-ij nity of two. But, then, the Cairo
members believed that "the iuterest of the
party" (really, the interest of the anti
Thomas fraction) demanded the selection
ofCarbondale in preference to Cairo, and
they weresj chock full of pitriotism that
they concluded to sacrifice local interests
to party interests, for which they are en
titled and will doubtless receive all praise
f:om Carbondale. This noble sacrifice
by the Cairo members of the committee
must cause a blush of shame to rise to the
faces of the Jackson County members and
their friends, who, while knowing that the
selection of Carbondale would be prejudi
cal to their favorite, yet voted in favor of it,
because- it was their own city.
Evea if Athlophoros the champion
remedy for rheumatism and neuralgia
pn.duced no other effect than giving speedy
relief to pain, reducing swelling and lim
berog stiffened joints and muscles, it would
still outnmk all ordinary remedies. But
it does vastly more. It goes for the onuses
of these pains and swellings, which it finds
in tho blood, and destroys them. The
ncidulous poisons expelled trom blood and
system, a healthy and natural circulation
restored, tho wwt k of Athlophoros is done
and the sufferer ia well.
