Teachers educated nnd trained to observe the following principles, based on psychology will iustruct children more "rapidly nnd intelligently, and exercise a better, moral inlluence, than teachers fresh from tho secondary schools nnd colleges who havo never received an hour's instruction iu tho art nnd science of teaching: 1. His n. taod is simply his way of doing this. !. originates" Lis method. .Socrates, h his devout love of truth, his un .ned humility, his keen detection t lie shallowness of men's pretensions :. d a wav of bringing men by u series i questions to a consciousness of their avu ignorance, and revealing to them iii necessity of a re-examination of tho i:v fotindati'TiS of their pretended knowledge. Not the Socratic method, but the man Socrates, was the mighty power in Athens. A public instructor who thinks to become great by the use tif this Soeratie method, respects tho Eilicy of tho ass which donned the .m s skin. A teacher may be great in spite of his acethod. The methods of Michael Augulo were faulty, and it is not dlfti c iit for a critic to point out defects in his work. Men of less genius attcmpt ir to do as Le did would meet only w .th failure; nevertheless Michael Au-g-.-lo was a great artist, his works a.v imperishable, his name will be as enduring as art itself. The magnifi cence of LU conceptions, though im perfectly embodied, lent a new majesty to architecture, painting, sculpture, and lovers of art go in troops to the Siitino Chapel to view his matchless statue of Moses. The method of I'esta lc zzi, crude and faulty though it was, could not entirely prevent the achieve ment of at least partial success in his philanthropic schemes. Carlylo was a ere at writer m s fcnglish. In our o luiiua numerous teachers who, not Vithstamlinz the most faulty methods, are accomplishing great results. not only iu imparting much useful instruc t'on, but iu awakening mind, develop big character, nnd inciting to noble Jiving. Nevertheless, every teacher who as- T'ires, to the highest excellences should I e master of method. His task is one tl infinite dillieultv. nnd calls not only Ijr ch..i-neter of rare nobility talents of 1 lrh order, and libera! l.'iirtiinw.bnt al to for skill of the highest order iu the J.djustmeut of means to ends. Method is applied to philosophy. A teacher who achieves succ-ss by virtue of the i.ilcn-itv of Lis personality; in suite of the fauliiness of his method, might be I till more successful by greater regard lo the means used in libs endeavors. J..ocut:uu is not oratory; it is too often Juere empty sound, l'eter the Hermit, in his beggar's garb, moved all Europe I'V his uncouth' speech; and yet De mosthenes strove with masterly will to ijvercome defects and achieve" a style nnd manner which should serve as a liiedium fur tho conveyance of his own lofty thoughts k) the minds and hearts i4 Lis countrymen, and incite them to lieerls of lofty valor. The studied arts 5n Uic use ol voice, gesture, manner, lend a charm mKi potency even to 'words that breathe and thoughts that Imrn. ' No teacher can Hatelv neglect tho uddcd power imparted bv'a correct Jnethod. Teachers should strive constantly to attaiu new degrees of excellence in method. Perfection ever allures even Hie most ambitious. Tho greatest master is yet a tyro. There is no "Tho Method." Method is the outgrowth 'jf philosophy, nnd must adjust itself to the laws of mind and to tho exigen cies of science. What are the laws of tmiud? What constitutes education? "What is tho educational value of each nt the science's? aro some of the j;ies lious that remain to vex tho educator. Progressive inquiry is possible in each direction, and ;aeh successive attain ment admits, if it ,,)es not demand, a modification in method. Method must likewise rocogni.o ih(J individuality of tho pupil. That which mav be most potent with one, may pro've utterly impotent with another. Method easily degenerates into routine, dead formal, ism. (ireat reforms are often liolhin" nioro than desperate, endeavors to break away from this life-less formality. Iconoclasm becomes a virtue, and cmpyricism meritorious. Erasmus and Ulrica von llutton were the furerunners of thoso who re(!onstructed the world's religious teaching. Every teacher should himself bo n perpetual reformer. Tho man nnd his method exert a reciprocal influence upon each other. A growing manhood characterized by loftier aims, wider research, greater attainments, deepen od experien', manifests itself in improved methods of work. On tho other hand tho in creased skill secures better results, loads to larger endeavors and broader Importunities, kindles new cnthusi- ETHIC3 OK I1HTOUY. Nothing else that is taught iu tho public schools has so much to do with forming character as the Heading Les sons, especially is this truo of tho proso lessons in biography, in history, nnd in eloquence, and of nearly all the poetical pieces found iu tho well edited Headers. The teacher of a reading class, therefore, may bo amoral teacher in tho best sense of tho word; almost without appearing lo do so sho can inculcate patriotism, truth, honor, re verence nud most of the moral virtues. Tho reading lesson gives an oppor tunity to develop character, without lecturing or preaching, that the good teacher will not lose. Cleveland, 0., Xcho'jl Lul'.eHn. IXl'l CTIVE METHOD. It must bo ackowledged that tho methods of disquisition and teaching may be sometimes different, nud on very good reasons undoubtedly; but for my part I am convinced that the method of teaching which approaches most nearly to tho method of investiga tion is comparably tho best; since, not content with serving up a few barren and lifeless truths it leads to tho stock on which they grew; it tends to set the reader himseif in the track of invention, and to direct him into those paths in which tho author had mado his own discoveries, if he should be so happy as Hi have ma le any that are valuable. Ediv. n 'id JJ it rk :. GOOD ADVICE. In the midst of the din of this great workshop, we all at. limes need to bo reminded why schools aro instituted, nnd for whom they are carried on. There is no reason whv the hallowed influence of home should not reign in the school-room. We sometimes fret because we cannot change human nature and make it niter our own model. Here variety is infinite, and the teacher is not expected to enter into conflict with nature, but to take humanity as he finds it, and clip as good angels as he can from the marble presented. I here is, undoubtedly, a tender spot in the heart of every wild school-boy. and the approach to it may be a labyrinth: but it is worth seeking out, ana oitentimes tne uov s success failure in life defends on llniing is or failing in the search. Uidnr.U't'i, tW'icothc, O. WHV NOT? If a language is to be learned, I would teach it in the easiest known method, and at the age when it can be easiest learned. But there is another theory which is often acted upon, thotig'h seldom explicitly stated, the theory that, for the sake of discipline, hardness that is avoidable should be deliberately imposed upon boys; as, for instance, by forcing a boy to study many languages wno nas no guts mai may and can never attain to any mas tery of them. To my mind the only justifi cation of any kind of discipline, train ing or drill is attainment of tho appro priate end of that discipline. It is a waste for society, and an outrage upon tho individual, to make a boy spend the years when he is most teachable in a discipline, tne cnu oi wincn ne can never reach, when he might have spent them in a different discipline, which would have been rewarded by achieve ment. vrtsl. knot.
