Hudson and Silver Cloud last Friday night,
was quite serious, but under tbe skillful

ing well when we left.
The Summer Hotel Willow.
If anyone who has traveled much in
tho summer has encountered a fashion
able summer resort hotel without its wid
ow it is very exceptional. Tho widow
is inevitable to tho surroundings. Sho
is always interesting, generally has
lino eyes and dresses well und wears
diamonds. But it is her manner as a
nilo, that is most attractive. In nine
cases out of ten sho has a little girl
whoso early rotiromeut to tho arms ot
Morpheus is her greatest anxiety, or
rather one of her greatest, for she seems
anxious when left alono even after re
lieved of this annoyance. Her man
ner is usually brilliant and effusive and
almost always insures her tho notico
and attention of gentlemen. She does
things, as a matter of course, that tho
voung uumarriod ladies aro forbiddcu
by their mothers to do, and tho moth
ers have a hard time explaining to tho
daughters why what is right for tho
widows is wrong for thom. The moth
ers very often tako rovengo by mis
representing tho widow and telling
their daughters to have nothing to do
with her. But tho widow has a good
time and very often the unmarried girls
don't Still, according to her own
standards, she koeps within bounds,
and no matter how hardly pressed U
genorally mistress of tho situation.
This is the gay young widow. Of course
thcro are others who aro saints in de
portment. Philadelphia Tmes.
Cooking a an Art.
Tho man who presides over tho
kitchen in a lirst-class hotel is an abso
lute monarch. Nobody ventures to
question his acts, and even his em
ployers make their feeble suggestion in
a deferential way. Tho modern chef is
an artist as well us a student, aud for
his use is provided n library tilled with
all tho standard works upon his art.
Hero ho consults his authorities, and
plans his campaigns of gastronomic
conquest. In the kitchen aro subordin
ates of manygrudos who look up to
him with awo. Tho chef of a loading
hotel in New York lately admitted a
reporter to his inner sanctum, and
there confided to him the great secrot
of the oooking art. This, it appears,
is tho making of sauces. "Everything
in its raw state," says the oracle, "has
a distinctive taste, but the cook's art is
to bring it to tho surfaco so that it
reaches tho palate. The socrot in our
profession is to supply flavors where
they are absent and develop them
when they are there, just as the paint
er makes his effect stand oat from the
canvas." Bolton Ifcmld.

A Popular Fallacy.
Many people think that rheumatism can
not be cured. It is caused by a bad state
of the blood which deposits poisonous mat
ter in the joints and muscles, causing lame
ness, stiffness and swelling of tbe joints and
excrutiating pains. Kidney-Wort will cer
tainly effect a cure. It sets on the kid
neys, liver and bowels, stimulating them
to a healthy action, purified and enriches
the blood, and eliminates tho poison from
the system. Go to tbe nearest druggist,
buy Kidney-Wort and be cured.
