A petition in voluntary bankruptcy
was filed this morning in tho district
court by several of the creditors of
J. Ernest Walker, whose disniitieuruiirn
from the city Iuih been the topic of
much gossip ami speculation tho past
two or throe weeks, says tho Arizona
The creditors signing tho petition are
tho I'ratt-Gilmoro company, George
llaggerman, tho plumber; E. S. Wnko
lin, and Ezra V. Thayer. Tho total in
debtedness is a little over $000.
Tho petition sots forth that Walker
cannot bo found at his plnco of busi
ness, and that to tho best knowledge
and belief of tho petitioners ho has absconded.
It is furthor sot forth thnt Walker
has assigned his interest in tho dredge
and other property in tho Florence
project to his father-in-law, 1). D. Hom
ing. Walker, it will bo recalled, left
Phoenix on the evening of January 3.
He bade his wife a fond farewell at
the depot before departing, and to all
whom ho left he stated he was going
to Los Angeles to recuperate.
He was seen in Los Angeles on the
evening of the 7th, when he was in
consultation with Dr. Stewart, a well
known Los Angeles physician, and to
a Phoenix acquaintance on that oven
ing he stated that he was very sick
from an attack of heart trouble.
His continued absence from tho city
was followed by tho doparturo of the
man who has charge of his office hero,
-Mr. White, who after a few davs. was
joined by D. D. Homing, fathor-in-lnw
After a few days, Whito returned,
and shortly thereafter he was followed
by Horning, and it was given out by
them that thoy had been able to trace
Walker to San Francisco, where thoy
lost all track of him. They gavo it
out that thoy knew not wliero ho was,
but there was a hint of a fear that
Walker, suffering from tho mental
strain connected with his Florence pro
ject, might have "taken arms against
a sea of troubles and by opposing, oud
However, it was later reported that
Walker had boon seen on a train go
ing to El Paso, and ho was quoted by
an acquaintance as saying while
on board that train that he was going
down into Mexico to begin life over
again. This report was hardly in circu
lation, though, before a Phoenix party
who knew Walker, saw him on a train
going from Pasadena to Los Angeles.
Thnt was last Saturday and was the
last heard about Walker
Walker's local interests have been
nbsorbed by the Los Angeles Trust
company, ot. which General Mose Sher
man is tho head. General Sherman, or
tho company, was given a warranty
deed Inst summer to practically all of
the real estato in tho valley in which
Walker was- interested, in return for
which considerable cash was advanced

v There is a Kentuckian who desires
the Republican to light him along a
rather dark and uncertain matrimonial
way upon which ho has set out under
the indefinite direction of some Chicago
Thero was received at this office yes
terday the following communication:
While reading tho Pilot of Chicago
I saw tho ad of an heiress stating that
she is wortli $120,000. I hope you will
make a news item of this and ask her
to address Box 223, Richmond, Ky,
This matter was turned over to the
matrimouiiil editor of the Republican,
who lias made a minute search of the
town for the heiress, but has so far,uot
discovered her, though ho lias not given
up hope. He is interested in tho cuse
not from a professional point of view
or out of a feeling of sympathy with
Box 22a, Richmond, Ky. But if he finds
the heiress he will endeavor to convince
her ilint it is wholly unnecessary to
convoy her eallii to Kentucky or to
take it out of the territory.
Box 223 would have no ground for
a breach of promise suit for his note
robs him of it at once. He is entirely
too guarded. He lays no claim to the
hoiress by discovery in the (Jhicugo Pi
lot, as he might have done, and so
have clinched tho whole affair. Ho
manifests a little more than a mere
curiosity which would not stand for a
minute m a court of law. It is plain
that he wants only that $120,000 and
merely desires to ascertain tho char
acter of the incumbrance that goes
with it. Tho matrimonial editor will
find a husband for tho heiress who will
love her for herself alone and donate
tho $120,000 to charity. Republican.
