TIIE BIO SUN SPOT
An Export Gives Viows as to What It
Means to the Earth
Sun spots lmvo to bo treated with
preat respect tnowndnys. When a big
one, like that now visible, nppenrs It
plays an important part in tho nows of
the day, because tho fact is getting to
be more ami more widely recognized
that when the sun shows n distorted
countenance ho is exercising forces that
promptly react upon r littlo planot,
even though it is more than ninety mil
lion miles distant.
Space is no obstaclo to electric waves,
and oven clectrjcally charged particlos
shot out from tho sun cross tho great
gulf to the earth in two or three days,
at longest.
Tho appearanco of a sun spot is evi
dence of an explosion in the solar globo.
There is an outburst of forco which
hnrls vast quantities of metallic vapors
to tho height of hundreds of thousands
of miles, and when a great group of
spots forms the explosions and upheav
als are probably ropeated many times
in swift succession.
Some of tho later observations indi
cate that there exist particular places
on the sun whero theso outbreaks aro
more likely to occur than at any othor
point. The progress of electrical scioneo
shows that such gigantic manifestations
of activity givo rise to electro-magnetic
effects that may bo felt at immonso dis
tances from tho point of origin. Thus
there is nothing unreasonable or con
trary to established laws in tho theory
that oven tho weather may bo moro or
less governed, in particular circum
stances, by what is occurring on tho
sun.
Tho most immediato elTcct of a solar
s outbreak of this kind is manifested in
the electric state .of tho atmosphere
There aro many records already, within
the brief time that theso phouomonn
have been studied, of great auroral dis
plays and magnetic .storms, seriously
affecting tho telegraph systems of tho
earth, coincident with sun spot disturb
ances. Tho earth seems to respond to
the sudden impulses from tho sun like
a body involvde in an intonso olectric
field. If it wero situated much nearer
to tho sun, tho effectwould probably be
tremendous, but even at its actual dis
tance it cannot escape thorn altogether.
Unfortunately, scioneo is not yot able
to predict with certainty tho terrestrial
effects connected with sun spots. Some
times a groat spot appears, and no ro
suit is apparent on our globe. It is like
a shot that has missed its target or that
has been fired in anothor direction.
Then, again, only a relatively small spot
may appear on the sun when n severe
magnotic storm shivers through the at
mosphere. But progress is being made in this
study, and one of tho greatest practical
steps of modern scienco is tho establish
ment of the solar obsorvatory on Mount
.Wilson, in California, which may bo ex
pected within a few years to throw
much light upon these vast mysteries.
