OLOIU:, March 25. (lutes of New
York nays: Liquidation was in evi
dence throughout the session. There
nio no further development in any di
rection, and foreign news was more
favorable, if anything. The decline is
undoubtedly canned by general uneasi
ness on aeeouut of federal and stato
legislation and labor situation, which
is not good. IJceause of this agitation
confidence had been shaken and we can
not sec much in way of cessation in
liquidation until somo sort of nssuranco
is given out publicly from the right
source of a reassuring nature. Ordin
arily, the market should be a jmrohaso
for a turn, but do not think it yet
time.
1'aiae. Webber & Co. of Boston say:
Market was demoralized all day and
showed. no rallying Kwer at close. Fur
ther minora of liniuicial trouble, nbroad
and higher money rates all contributed
to heavy selling. No definite news came
out regarding failures, but no doubt we
shall hear of some in a few days. While
we think there are some good bargains,
we would buy only with cash or with
substantial margins.

WON MILLION IN THE SLUMP
Wonderful' Talo of Stock Operating
from Lakowood, N. J,
As the culminating stroke of a re
markable bear campaign in the stock
market, .1. Brand! Walker, a member
of the Chicago stock exchange, staying
at the' Lakewood hotel, is said to have
cleaned up more than $1,000,000 yester
day. He conducted operations from a
room in the Lakewood hotel, where he
had n private wire and tolephono eoa-
.uecting him with brokerage houses in
New York.
At the Lakewood "hotel last night Air.
Walker modestly refused to say any
thing about his winnings. When pressed
by reporters, however, he admitted that
n transaction in United States Steel had
made him profit of $50D,00O.. Jle said
he sold 50.000 shares around 50, when
he had bought in at from 3$ to 30.
"I began selling stock six mouths
ago," said Mr, Walker, "because the
bond market was steadily declining,
while Ktocks were advancing. Tho rail
roads were putting out new seeurities
and increasing dividends at the same
time. This hud to end but one way
sooner or later.
"I began selling Union Pacific at
100. 1 did not see how any railroad
in this country, or any other country,
could get nites high enough to pay 10
per cent dividends, particularly when
the Chicago & Northwestern, the stand
ard railroad of this country, only paid
7 per cent. 1 do not believe" that the
decline is over. 1 believe that liquida
tion will soon start iu copper stocks.

Mr. Walkor is the soinof Kdwin Walk
er, who in one of the foremost corjwra
tion lawyers iu this country and for
many years has beon the chief counsel
of the Chicago, Milwaukee'' & St. Paul
railroad. Jle established tho firm of

IS-YOUR WATCH IN GOOD ORDER?
When waa it oiled and cleaned last?
It needs oiling and cleaning once
every 18 months at least, whether you
think it does or not.
It needs that attention just as sure
as an engine does to get the best re

destructive of the fine mechanism.

"JUST LANDED" A SCENE AT ELLIS ISLAND.
The illustration shows a typical group of Immigrants at the gate of the
United States, Ellis Island. The woman Is n Hungarian. Like the Immi
grant women of other races, tho Hungarians come laden with babies and
bundles. .Many of tho Incoming citizens carry all they have on their bucks
and In their arms. The money they possess does not average $.r0 to an Immi
grant, though there are some who bring several thousand dollars. The wealth
of tho average Immigrant consists chiefly of children. T'hero Is seldom nuy
scarcity In this respect. MUllous of these children become full fledged Amer
