GLOBK, April !. Logan & Bryan oi
New York say: Market closed with
quite it Hiibstautial gain all along the
line. At no time did the weaker tone
in the London market have any bearing
on price making conditions outside of
cheaper inouoy, all being ignored. News
that Erie had issued live million short
time notes did not even cause tremor in
the list. The magnificent statement oi
earnings by the Southern Pacific start
ed gossip of (5 per cent basis for com
mon stock. Trades, -however, seemed
largely made up of professional opera
tions, general opinion in New York be
ing that shorts were covering. Murkot
seems to have earmarks of a trading
nlTair, but if easy money continues list
will undoubtedly sell higher.
Paino of Boston says: Murkot opened
strong this omrniug. Loudon copper
quotations came much higher. There
was a marked scarcity of stock offer
ings. Baluklala and Greene Canauea
were traded in on the unlisted depart
ment today and trading in the former
was active. There was good deniaud for
copper linage, Old Dominion, North
Butte and in fact all active Lssucs were
in better request. We look for a con
tinuauee of this slow upward move until
prices work back somewhere near the
prices seen before the recent panic.
Butto says: Butte Coalition bus re
sumed sinking on linrus shaft and will
carry it down to 2,500-foot level. Com
pany is also crosscutting at 1,900-foot
level to their veins.
Now York says: Bearish copper re
ports from Loudon do not concern large
producers here.
President Roosevelt says that Stand
ard Oil and ilarriman interests are co
operating to put a reactionary in the
Whito House.

OLD DOMINION IS

George L. Walker Says that Globe Mine

Will Ultimately Sell at $200.
time a great deal of feeling of u hope
ful or bullish nnture Is likely to de
velop, and the chances aro more than
oven that wo shall witness a very sub
stantial recovery in a numbor of the
best copper stocks.
Few of the things which are univer
sally expected materialize. None know
this better than those who follow the
stock murkot. Just at present almost
everybody is confident that tho price of
copper is about to decline, probably to
20 cents and perhaps to 15 conts. Every
body may bo mistaken. It is not impos
sible that the metal murkot will hold up
to its present lovol thioughout tho re
mainder of the year. Should it develop
a month or two hence that consumors
weio making new contracts for dolivory
of coppor during July and August at 25
conts per pound, tho best coppors would
again sell up to approximately their
highest prices. This is what happened
in tho steel and iron trade four years
ago. We all remembor how tho steel
stocks recovered. It may happen this
year with copper. The chance that it
will is ono of many reasons why the
stocks of tho best producing coppor
mines nro especially attractive invest
ments. Of tho dividend payors, Amalgamated,
Anaconda, Butto Coalition, Calumet &
Ueclu, Calumet & Arizona, Copper
Hange, Greene, Granby, Mohawk, North
Butto, Osceola, Quincy, Shannon, Utah
Consolidated and Wolverjno are all
cheap. The best ones to buy, Lowever,
aro those which muko their copper at
u low cost, and which have under way
plans for largo increases of production.
Among these tho most conspicuous ure
Copper Range, Granby, Greene nud
Utah Consolidated. All of these stocks
should sell higher than present prices
in two years from now, even should the
price of copper then bo below 15 cents
per pound.
There arc a number of other copper
stocks which ure made especially at
tractive by the slump in prices as well
us by recent mine developments. Among
these Old Dominion and Boston Con
solidated aro most conspicuous. Utah
Copper, Cumberland Ely, Nevada Con
solidated, East Butte, Boston Corbin,
Utah Apex, Giroux Consolidated, Bal
aklala, Michigan, Helvetia and Boston
Ely appeal to mo as tho very best spec
ulative purchases among the non-dividend
paying copper stocks, regardless of
all possible unfavorable developments in
the financial situation. These stocks at
current panic prices aro deserving of
more than passing notice.

The following glowing opinion of the
Old Dominion mine is from the weekly
copper letter of George L. Walker, ed
itor of tho Boston Commercial, which
appeared in the Inst issue of that pa
per: Old Dominion's most recently dis
covered ore body continues to grow in
extent and richness as development pro
ceeds. Tho astonishingly high grade
of the ore being encountered on the
14th level is interesting to metallurgical
and mincrnlogical students as well as to
stockholders. It suggests the probabil
ity that Old Dominion's original vein
was massive chalcopyritC, and that this
very high grade copper mineral will be
found predominant in the vein after
tho zone of secondary enrichment is
passed. If this in correct, Old Dominion
will bo the jKsseiisor of tho only known
large vein of cholcojiyrito ore in tho
world. The great richness of the leach
ed ore deposits in the upper levels of
tho mine, and the comparatively small
amounts of iron which the ore carried
tend to sustain this, theory.
I have partially"'cdnfirmod and am
well satisfied that tho retorts which arc
now coming from the mine are reliable.
They indicate to mo that Old Dominion
is destined to be ono of the very great
copper mines of tile world. Its stock
is probably worth $100 per share at
present, with a possibility of an ulti
mate value of $200 or more per share.
I believe tho company will begin to
pay substantial dividends this year, and
I regard tho stock as o .o of tho most
attractive speculative purchases on the
list.

Itegard'mg tho recent slump Walker
says:
The decline in market prices was as
tonishingly rapid, and the best of tho
coppers suffered quite as much propor
tionately as those representing no dem
onstrated valuo. A great many over
extended speculative accounts were
liquidated. The extremo strength of
the money market caused a numbor of
railroad corporations to discontinue all
betterments nnd extensions. Markot in
terests iealized when this announcement
was mado that tho result would bo a
greatly reduced demand for iron and
steol and decreased employment of la
bor. Tho reason for tho heavy selling
of tho market, especially in tho steol
stocks, is traceable to this. The aston
ishingly low prices touched by somo of
tho best stocks was tho result of tho
forced salo of margined accounts. It is
difficult for ono who realizes tho strong
industrial and financial position of tho
country to believe that the stocks of
tho best railroad, industrial and mining
companies are not worth a great deal
more than their recent selling prices.
The best of tho coppers liavo declined
lower than thoy should on a 15-ccnt cop
por markot. A very great deal of tho
coming business depression, if not all
of it, or moro than 'alf, has been dis
counted all ready. While it is quite
cortain that coppor stocks in genornl
will not advanco on declining metal
prices, it would seem cortain that tho
best stocks have already had their full
decline. There is a good prospect that
existing metal prices will bo maintained
for two or three months. During this
