Further Rumors of Harriman Investi
gation and Report that St. Paul Will
Stop Work on Pacific Extension Has
Caused Uneasiness.
(By I. N. Kiusoy)
GLOBE, April 11. Walker Brothers
of Now York Bay: Market oponed fair
ly strong mid was for soino timo ntciuly,
with rather active trading. After u
period of somo dullness ono of the large
houses sold somo ten thousand shares
of Union Pacific, supposed to have been
purchased yesterday and tho day bo
fore. This caused selling throughout
tho list and market sold off very rap
idly, declino oxtonding from ono and
one-half to threo per cent. Thero was
a rally of ono poiut shortly before tho
close. Further talk of investigation of
Ilnrrimnu's stock transactions and re
ported intorview with president of St.
Paul road that thoy wero considering
stoppage of work on Pacific extension
on account of hostile legislation in tho
west caused an uneasy feeling in tho
market.
Paino of Boston says: Wholo market
continued to sag today. Money Js grad
ually working easier, btu there scorns to
bo no interest at present in tho stock
markot and nobody wants to buy stocks
no inntter how' cheap it is to carry them.
Big belling agencies for copper aro still
holding up tho price o tho metal, but
no business is being done. Expect to
see stocks soil lower and would advise
profit taking around this lovol.

GLOBE, April 11. Tho stock market
today was a decidedly narrow ono and
I can call it nothing but a trader's
market. All stocks closed weaker than
the opening, Old Dominion closing at
$52.75 bid and $33 asked.
The undecided condition of tho motal
market has. created tho weakness and
until this has been clearly determined
by the public thero will probably bo
very little speculation. From good au
thority it is said tho copper markot
will not drop below 20 cents, and this
being tho caso all stocks should hold
u to as god figures as thoy have been
in tho past.
Old Dominion is a very good buy and
so is Utah Consolidated. Calumet & Ari
zona is suroly an attractive investment
bolow $160.

Jury Takes But Two Ballots at Flor
enco and Concludes Trial of Alleged
Murderer with a Verdict of Acquittal
Occurred at Kelvin.
After boing out less than two hours
tho jury sitting in tho murder trial
of Kobort De Vance at Florence laut
Friday brought in a verdict of not
guilty. Only two ballots wero taken.
Do Vance was charged with tho mur
der of John Koberts and a Mexican at
Kelvin on November 1, 1900, tho trag
edy taking place- in the saloon of Billy
Gamble.
Do A'anco and Koberts quarreled, and
in tho shooting "affray that followed
Roberts was killed by a bullet from
the revolver of Do Vance. The Mex
ican, an innocent bystander, was shot
through the stomach and died shortly
after.
Tho evidence wont to show that Hob
'erts shot first insido the saloon and
that Do Vnuco tried to get away. He
fell just as ho reached tho iloor, and,
pulling a revolver, shot Roberts dead.
Bad blood existed between the two
men on nccount of Do Vnnco report
ing to the Pinal officers that Roberts
was running a gambling game without
paying his license. The gamo was later
closed up.
Roberts, so tho evidence wont to
show, deliberately triedto murder De
Vance. In Gamblo's saloon ho cried
out for an officer to search Do Vance
for a gun and then begun shooting.
His aim was bad and it cost him his
life.
Attorney Franklin made a hard fight
for his client, bringing out evidence
which showed that Do Vanco had shot
entirely in self defense. A. 0. Baker
assisted tho dirict attorney of'Pinal
county in tho prosecution of the case,
which lasted three days.

Tho woman loft no noto or word of

Ho is tho scion of a wealthy Massa

luxury for tho lifo of a gambler, but
thero is certainly somo very strango
story or romanco behind it all.
Mrs. Bedford is belioved to havo been
