A Bloody Battlo
Two husky young men who toil un
derground in one of tho locnl mines
became involved in n disputo in ono of
the Broad street snloons yestordny af

adjournment to tho back yard. Thoro
tho two men battled for about twouty
minutes with no intermissions and uttor
disregard for tho Marquis of Queens
bury rules. Both wont to tho ground
innumerable times and tho bnttlo would
probably still bo in progiess had not
nn unusually hard wallop sent ono of
thorn to tho ground, whore ho took tho
count, which was punctnntcd by short
arm jabs to thu jaw and hard hooks
to tho proboscis. Tho man bolow sig'
nified that ho had received sufllciont for
ono day, both aiosc, shook hands, wash
cd away the goro which hid their fea
tures and made their getaway before
tho cops got wise.
Big Log Tramway
H. L. Gibson returned yesteiday from
a trip to Phoenix and, having stoppod
over at SafTord to visit tho sawmill of
tho Gibson Lumber company, iu tho
Graham mountains. Tho eopipnuy is
putting iu a tramway '1,400 feot in
length from a jmint near tho top of
the mountain down io the sawmill.
This should bo completed in ten days
whon tho delivery of logs to tho mill
will begiu. Tho tramway is an expens
ivo affair and somo diflicult problems
wero met with in its construction. How
ever, tho success of tho enterprise seems
reasonably well assured. Tho company
will find its principal market in Globe
and will also supply tho Gila valloy and
Clifton with lumber.
Activity at Kay and Kelvin
P. A. Schilling, well known mining
man of Bay, Pinal county, arrived in
the cUv yesterday afternoon and will
remain several days. Mr. Schilling wiy
a great revival of mining hns taken
place iu the district about Ray and
Kelvin and operations have been plan
ned on a large scale by several com
panies. Mr. Schilling and his partner,
Mr. Sherlock, some time since sold for
$95,000 to W. P. Dunham, president of
the Hercules Copper company, the In
dian Springs group of twenty claims
adjoining tho Ray property on tho east
Ono pnyinent has been made on the In
dinu Springs property and another pay
ment will be duo in a short time.
Dumped from Buggy
J. X. Purdum, manager of tho Globe
Hardware company, had a narrow cs
capo from serious injury yesterday
noon. Ho was driving around tho cor
ner of Cottonwood and Sutherland
streots, back of Dreamland, when his
horse became frightened aad bolted.
The buggy containing Mr. Purdum was
overturned. The vehicle was badly
damaged and Mr. Purdum emerged from
tho wreckage somo what bruised, but
still in the ring.
Iris Is Jammed
The S. H. O. sign was up early at
both performances at the Iris last oven
ing, when the program underwent its
usual semi-weekly chano and tho house
was crowded to the doors. Tho new
pictures and illustrated songs were very
well received. Electric fans have been
instnlled in tho house, which will add
greatly to tho comfort of tho patrons,
although tho evenings have not become
warm enough to cause any inconvenience
Tire at Pleasant Valley
Word has been received from. Pleas
ant Valloy that on April 3 fire des
troyed the schoolhouse at that place
and only the hard work of tho Valley
ites saved the bam of George W. Hnrrl
wood, located near by. A large amount
of hay was stored iu the barn. Miss
May Herron, tho school teacher, and
her pupils fought tho fire to tho last,
but failed to save the schoolhousv. Only
tho bell was left.
Dreamland Changes Hands
J. L. Alexander and brother, A. C.
Alexander, have purchased the interests
of Messrs. Morehead and Jones in tho
Dreamland theater and rink and Inst
evening took over tho big place of
amusement. J. L. Alexander will here
after be tho manager of tho place.
Homo Is Destroyed
C. K. Hubottom, tho jeweler, received
a telegram yesterday stating that hie
residence at Sunta Ana, Cal., had been
destroyed with all its contents. Mr.
Rubottom's family was loft homeless
and sustained tho loss of all of their'
clothes and household effects.
