OUTLAW
AT

LI
Former Member of Bill Smith
Gang. Caught and in Jail
Wanted in New Mexico
Special to tho Silver Belt.
SOLOMONVILLE, Ariz., July 5.
Georgo Smith, a former member of tho
Hill Smith band of outlaws, is in tho
county jail hero awaiting tho arrival
of tho sheriir of Lincoln county, N. M.
Ho is wanted for a recont horso stealing
affair in that county.
Smith as a boy of 18 years took part
in tho desperate fight on Blue river six
years ago between ho Smith gang and
u posse from New Mexico. Hill Smith,
tho leader, was bandly wanted for being
implicated in tho Holbrook train rob
bery. Ho and two brothers were in re
tirement on tho IJluo when tho New
Mexico officers surprised them. A rang
er named Dofoya and a deputy sheriff
nnmod Maxwell were killed and Georgo
Smith, tho man now under arrest, was
shot through tho body and terribly
wounded.
Tho outlaws escaped nnd havo never
been captured. Several weeks ago
Georgo Smith oamo into Morelici
ami' voluntarily surrendered to tho
officers. No chnrgo being found against
him anywhere he was rclensed, tho pres
ent ehargo'linving since developed.
Ho tolls an interesting Btory of tho
bloody fight on tho Blue, stating that
Bill did all of the fighting nnd repulsed
the officers alone. Although badly
wounded, the boy wandered for weeks
in tho hills and finally recovered with
out any medical attendance.
The body of W. T. Bodwcll, a mission
ary of the Adventist church, who was
drowned in the Gila January 31, has
been found buried in tho sand. Bodwell
attempted to cross tho river pony when
it was high and was carried away and
drowned. Every effort was mado to
recover tho body, but without success.
This week it was found by a Mexican
wood hauler. About $75 in money, a
gold watch and various papers which
the man had in his possession were miss
ing, which indicates that the body had
been robbed and probably purposely
hidden. Bodwell lived at Tucson.
