Original "Old Glory"
Tho torni "Old Glory" used to desig
iinto tlio flag of our country, is a favor
ite, and tho. expression is a very happy
one.
.It is said by those who claim to bo
woll informed that tho name originated
with William Driver, captain of tho
bark Chnrlus Doggett. This statement
appears in a history of tho Driver fam
ily, and from this wo find tho follow
ing facts:
Driver was a succoMsful deep sea
sailor, and was at the timo making his
vessel ready for a voyngo to tho sou th
orn 1'acifie. In 1831, just as tho brig
was about to set sail, a young man at
tho head of a jmrty of tho captain's
friends saluted Driver on tho deck of
tho Doggett, and presented to him a
handsome American ling, 19 by 38 feet
in size. Tho banner was dono up in
stops, and when it went aloft and was
ilung to tho breeze, Captain Driver, says
tho tradition, then and there named it
"Old Glory." Tho ling was earriod
to tho south seas and over treasured by
its owner.
Driver removed to Nashvillo, Tenn.,
in 1837, and thero died in 1880. Roforo
tho outbreak of hostilities between tho
north and south "Old Glory" flewalnily
from a window in tho captain's Nash
villo house, but when the rumors of
war became facts, it was carefully so
cietod. When tho war broke out tho precious
Hag was quilled into an innocent look
ing comfortable, and used on tho cap
tain's bed until February 27, 1S02,
jwhon the Sixth Ohio marched into
Nashville. Then tho Hag came out of
its covering and tho captain presented
it to tho regiment, to bo hoisted over
tho eapitol.
Thoro it floated until it began to tear
in ribbons, when it was taken down
and a new one placed on tho building.
After tho death of Captain Driver, tho
first "Old Glory" wns given to tho
Essox Institute at Salem, whero it is
still preserved, and may bo seen by tho
curious. Kansas City Journal.
Monoy for Redemption
An uuprcccdontcdly largo amount of
monoy is pouring into tho United
States treasury for redemption these
days, despito tho fact that this is the
dull season. Tho volume of old and
wornout currency received for exchange
in tho month of July broke all records,
nnd it has been found necessary to cur
tail tho leaves of absenco of many of
tho department clerks nnd to employ
additional counters in order to handle
tho monoy. Usually a total redemption
of $1,500,000 per dny is considered nor
mal, and if tho amount were to bo in
creased to $2,000,000 comment would bo
excited. Recently, howover, tho aver
ago daily exchange of now paper money
for old has been about $3,000,000, anil
on ono or two occasions has run up
to nearly $1,000,000. Never beforo has
tho treasurer's office been so hard
pressed to attend to tho work. Every
body connected with the treasury de
partment is nstounded by the tremen
dous demand for fresh bills, which is
accepted as an indication of rcmark
ablo activity in commercial circles all
over the country. The banks constantly
accumulate stocks of wornout and
soiled paper money, and thcso arc then
shipped to Washington to bo exchanged
for clean, fresh, crisp bills. Washing

Carlislo Taboocs Politics
During tho summer tho formerly dis
tinguished Kcntuckian, lion-. John O.
Carlisle, has frequently been seen in
tho streets of Washington. Ho has not
changed radically sinco ho was speaker
of tho houso of representatives and sec
retary of tho treasury department,
though his step is less sprightly and ho
is a trifle heavier. Legal business ac
counts primarily for his frequent so
journs here. Ho likes Washington, and
doubtless would prefer to mako his
residence hero. New York, however,
affords the finest Hold in tho country
for a man of his eminent legal ability,
nnd it is understood that he has pros
pered sinco ho retired from public life.
Mr. Carlislo persistently refuses to dis
cuss politics. To newspaper men who
scok an interview with him ho is in
variably afTablo, but uncommunicative.
Many Kcntuckians aro of tho opinion
that tho mistake of his lifo wns in giv
ing up his scat in tho United States
senate to enter Mr. Cleveland's cab
inet. If Mr. Carlislo himself nurses any
rcgrot, it is not apparent. 'Washington

Tho closing speeches wcro over, at
the court of assizes. Following his
custom, tho judgo asked of tho defend

"Defendant, havo you anything to

In a cheerful, effeminate tono tho

ELK'S EMBLE
The motion to discourage the wearing of
the Elk teeth was overwhelmingly de

Philadelphia.
We carry an extremely large assortment
of Elk emblems; everything from silver
buttons to the most expensive diamond
mounted charms for presentation pur

For such members of the Fraternity
that have a personal prejudice against
the wearing of the teeth, we have a
