Tho P. & E. rnilnfad was thrown
about twolvo foot off tho right-of-way
by a blast Tuesday. Tho accidont oc
curred about two luilos this side of
Kelvin.
Tho railway pconlo woro quarrying
for rock with which to ballast thoir
roadbed and had run a tunnel into tho
side of a hill. This was about fifty
yards away from tho road.
Fro in tho onil of tho tunnel n shaft
was sunk and in this was stored COO
kegs of blasting powder.
Tuesday afternoon whon this was
touched oil tho whole country for miles
around felt tho forco of tho explosion.
Hugo rocks woro thrown hundreds of
foot into tho air and rained down as
far as a quarter of a mllo away.
A landslide was caused by this ex
plosion nnd tho rails of tho P. & E.
for a distance of fifty feet woro ro
moved at least twelve foot off tho right-of-way.
Tho roadbed itself was covered
by the falling rock to a depth of sev
eral feet.
