Dreamland hold tho record crowd of
tho season last night, the occasion being
a raco botweon Baumgnrdnor, Dugan
and Professor Steele Baumgardncr was
tho favorite, many bots being plneed
at 2 to 1 on him as against tho field;
jProfcssor Stcolo had a great many
admirers, and they wore quietly putting
their money down and not making much
noise about it.
Promptly at 9:30 Manngor Alexander
cleared tho floor and announced the
race, naming W. J. Trahey, referee; 0.
V. Millor, Freddie Green and Frank
Laeoy, judges; Lcslio Georgo, time
kcopor, and W. H. Moon, starter.
At tho tap of ho gong Stcolo sprang
in tho lend like a flash and Baumgard
nor followed, a close second. Steele
tried for n runaway raco and struck a
terrific rate of speed, gaining an eighth
on Baumgardnor, when Baumgardncr
sprinted and caught him, and from tho
fifth Ian on it wns nip and tuck, with
Stcolo leading by feet only. At the
twelfth lap Baumgardncr made an ef
fort to pass Steele, but tho wily Shorty
was too Foxy, and tho way ho hugged
thoso corners of tho track was a cau
tion. Just then tho band started, playing
a wild rollicking gallop, and Steele fair
ly flow around tho track and nosed out
tho race by threo feet.
Dugan ran a game raco against odds
and without practice. Givo him prac
tico and ho will make Stcolo hustle to
beat him.
Tho timo for tho full milo wns 3 min
utes and 14 seconds, which is the Ari
zona record for a full milo on a meas
ured track, and the fastest timo ever
mado in Dreamland, which has tho best
proportioned and fastest track in the
southwest.
Tho immense audienco was very en
thusiastic and up on their toes with a
Greater Globo yell from start to finish
of tho race.
Steele and Baumgardncr are both ex
ceedingly good skaters, and very grace
ful, and tho management of Dreamland,
having been requested by many of the
people who witnessed last night's race,
to havo tho rac repeated, will no doubt
repeat tho card in tho near future.
