A WOULD-BE MOSES
It's pretty tough when a philan
thropist and reformer imbued with tho
spirit of tho brotherhood of man and
his heart brimming over with tho milk
of human kindness is repulsed in his
efforts to benefit mankind, Hut such
things Ho happen frequently. Hut it
is worso than that when a man answor
ing tho above description comes to n
town or mining canip and upon short
acquaintance takes charge of it only to
find that ho has grabbed a livo wire.
When tho Globe Miner started business
hero several weeks ago it was given out
authoritatively that things must
chango; that it was tho only lS-karat
all-wool-and-a-yard-wido and guaran
teed not to rip, tear, rust or run down at
tho heel friend of tho wage worker
that ever hit the grit; that it was the
benefactor of the miner and tho cham
pion of the mucker, ns well as the offi
cial municipal cancer expert of Qlobc.
Didn't it, under another namo and
in another place, champion tho cause of
the striking miners (at so much per
champion) and did it not then and
there hurl invectives at the soulless
corporations, until the paper on which
it was printed fairly sizzled! Of course
the wago worker, who is pretty easy
money for a slick grafter, wasn't sup
posed to know that on two different
occasions tho putative Moses who w.as
to lead them out of tho wilderness, had
fattened his purso by selling out to
those who he reviled. But for real easy
money tho workingman isn't in it with
tho average business man who depends
on tho former for his own living. That
dinner-pail argument is n powerful ono
it has won moro than ono national
election.
Hut tho reformer and philanthropist
got in bad, his first plungo being in
waters the depth of which ho had not
sounded, and ho was repudiated by
those whoso champion ho claimed to be.
It may.bo that tho working man of this
district is more intelligent than in tho
former fields of tho would-bo philan
thropist, and it is certain that ho has
more "savvy." Ho probably feels that
as long as ho must bo exploited ho pre
fers that it bo not dono by ono claim
ing to bo of his own kind.
.No man can servo two masters, and
ho must bo very evenly balanced to
carry water on both shoulders. Even
then one or tho other receptacle is
bound to tip at some stage of the game.
When a man or paper claims to bo a
friend of the workingman, tho latter
must bo shown and suspicion must at
tach, especially when tho claimant is a
recent deserter from tho workingman 's
real or supposed enemy. It is just a
few short years when tho would-be
savior of tho Globo wageworker was
running a paper to which ho was staked
by the biggest mining corporation in
Arizona and tho avowed enemy of
union labor, and then he was hiring
printers who could not show a union
card. It is perfectly natural that the
Globe district wageworker would want
to bo convinced of his present sincerity,
especially after his recent failures to
deliver tho goods, whero they were re
quired tho most.
curtailing: the production
Tho El Paso Herald is not very fa
vorably disposed toward tho idea (jf
curtailing tho production of copper with
tho hope of advancing tho prico and
making a stablo and healthy market.
Jt says:
To curtail copper production by delib
crato act is a most uneconomic pro
ceeding. It could only bo justified if
copper wcro being produced at an actual
loss, and this is certainly not tho caso
in any of tho big properties.
To close down mines and furnaces in
volves tho laying off of many men nnd
tho creating of much distress and un
certainty throughout tho communities
directly or indirectly dependent upon
, them for business activity. Moreover,
it cannot for long chango tho condition
in tho metal market, if that condition
is based on an actual lessening of de
mand. Jf tho withdrawal of purchasers
from tho market is only temporary,
causing tho slump, tho dcliberato shut
ting down of producing properties will
not mnko things botter. Tho consumers
well know that tho idlo mines and mills
are likely at any time to bo started up,
and they will adjust their demands to
actual needs week by week, letting tho
producers and Bineltcrs tako all tho
risks. k. jjjj
Copper will have to go back to such
;(.- s,Sr; - 0$?' YTJm"vfm?
a prico as will ennblo producors to
mako a fair profit, but at tho sumo timo
enable consumers to buy ahead with
reasonable nssuranco that there will bo
no great decline. An artificially high
prico for copper is flno for tho stock
holders in mines while it lasts, but the
rebound is certain, and then a lot of
pcoplo aro sure to got caught and hurt.
To curtail production with a view to
steadying tho markot is vory likely to
mnko tho consumors moro suspicious
thnn over, and causo thorn to curtail
thoir purchnses still moro, in tho fear
that tho market may bo brokon nny
timo by mines nnd mills starting up.

ROME, Scptombcr 19. Anxiety is
folt at tho Vatican as to tho outcome
of tho demonstrations tomorrow over
tho thirty-soventh anniversary of tho
fall of tho temporal power of tho pa
pacy and tho capture of Rome by tho
Italians. This year tho event is taken
as a decided anti-clerical in Vatican
circles. It is felt that anti-clcricnlism
is duo directly to tho influence of tho
Fronch enemies of tho papacy, working
directly through Frco Masonry, aiming
to start an agitation similar to that
in France. Popo Pius today said: "I
hope tho good senso of tho Italian pco
plo will prevent them from falling into
such a trnp, and thoy will remomber

Trie Village Justice Does Not
; Repose on Flowery Beds
f of Ease
Tho life of a Globe justice of tho
pedeo is not ono long delightful dream
ujxhi a bed of fragrant roses, whose
soft, volvoty potals hold the body aloof
from bruising rocks nnd painful thorns.
'nr from it!
Thero bo a wholo lot of pcoplo in
this frotful, turbulont, tempest-tossed
world who imngino, however, that in the
dispensation of right and justice as
delineated in logal lore, that tho vil
lage magistrate is all poworful and om
nipotent. V Judge," said a mook-oyed matron,
addressing Squire Thomas yestorday,
"my domestic lifo is unhappy, my bus
bnud don't love mo as ho should, and I
want a divorce."
V Sorry for you, madam," said tho
affable jurist, "but your troublos aro
slightly beyond tho jurisdiction of this
court. Go home nnd think tho mutter
over again carefully and' if you decido
thdt there must bo n general domestic
brijaking up, see some lawyer and he
will do tho rest."
Tho lady was noticeably disappointed,
but profusely thanked tho court and
lcfl tho room. Five minutes later an
excited Italian Htood in the august pres
ence. "Mr. Judge," ho fairly roared, "I've
lost my littlo dog, and won't you give
mo an order directing tho police to
find him and take him to my house.
ThJ) children are driving mo crazy and
thej old woman won't propare breakfast
until 'Neddie' is brought home."
Tho court smiled a sickly smilo and
suggested to tho son of Italy that if he
would call in an hour or bo he'd give
him n search warrant on every butcher
shop in town. Tho applicant for judi
cial rolief didn't seem to absorb tho full
significance of tho court's remark, but
took his departure. Tho screen door
leading into tho hall of justice had
BC&rcoly bumped tho jam when it
swung ajar again on its creaking
hirlges and a young Mexican entered
with troublo on his mind and weighing
down his heart.
'j'You remember, Mr. Justice," ho
started in, "about nino months ago you
married me to a young woman!"
Tho court, after scratching his head
and counting over, metaphorically, tho
casy money that had jingled down into
tluf triangular portion of his trousers
poiikcts, entered a plea of guilty, with
a silent prayer for mercy, as ho looked
intp tho troubled faco before him.
"Well, judge, she didn't mind me at
all after the first week and I want you
to -give me an order compelling her to
obey me."
Judge Thomas was amazed.
"What next!" he exclaimed in audi
ble tones.
"Young man, I havo been married
twenty-six years and not for a singlo
second of that period of timo havo I
bon able to mako my wife obey me.
Ju$t how I'm going to help you out is
something of a problem."
And nnothcr visitor, dejected in spirit
and with blasted hopes, filed out of tho
courthouse.
