INSULTING QUESTION
LEADS TO A GUN PLAY
"Ain-'t you closed up yot, scab I"
Maybe tho questioners were simply
jashing; maybo they -were serious
in tno interrogation; but, however that
mny bo, tho two fresh young men who
passed the question up to Steve Metro-
vich, who is employed in tho offices of
Jurovich & Co., doing business jn Eaglo
canyon, will perhaps never fully realizo
how closo they camo to getting a very
decisivo answer.
Mctrovich is a strong union man at
heart. He was ngagcV in finishing up
sorno work in tho offices of tho storo
Inst evening when w'o young mon
passed tho store. Ono of. them shouted
in at tho open window:
"Ain't you closed up yet, scab?"
Mctrovich 's blood boiled with right
eous indignation. He hates a scab with
tho same intensity that lie despises a
rattlesnake, and, reaching for a gun,
shoved tho barrel out tho open window
nnd probably "would bavc fired but tho
fresh ones had flown.
The arm of a huge crane struck the
telegraph wires at San Carlos last nighty
putting tho local office out of" commis
sion. A single wire was repaired, for
railroad business, but gave poor satisfaction.
