On "Friday tho Thirteenth" of De cember, tho big seven-masted schooner Thomas W. Lawson was wrecked in a fierce gale. And still thoro aro somo who say there is nothing in n name. "Funston Finds Symptoms of Trou ble," reads tho headline of a Phoenix paper. Was thoro ovor a timo tho doughty Kansan couldn't find "symp toms" or even tho real articlo, if he went looking for itt Billy Stiles has bobbed up again. Or rather, ho has not, excopt in the mind of somo imaginative sleuth. This timo ho was supposed to bo teaming at Bouse, on tho Arizona & Colorado railroad, but when tho officers got there, thoro was no Billy in sight. Tho Clifton papers allego that in his decision in tho famous tailings caso, Judge Navo delivered "a deathblow" to tho mining companies of tho Clifton Morcnei district, and thoy want to know what thoy aro to do with tho tailings. They might try eating them. A pop-corn vender at Tucson waa given a heavy fine for soiling infect ed popcorn in violation of tho puro food act. But the saloons keep on selling tho same old "scat" that never saw tho inside of a drtillcry. It .can hardly bo expected that all men who edit nowspapers can bo blue ribbon takers at a beauty show, but at tho samo timo you occasionally run across one who could take tho sweop NtSkns at a kennel show. A newspaper, according to "Webster, is "A sheet of paper printed and dis tributed, at short iutcrvals for convoy ing intelligence of passing oventa; a public print that circulates news, etc." An alleged newspaper is ono purporting to bo tho same, but which is not. No one likes a spy. But when ono compares a McPartland whe tric3 to down labor unions and another who un solicited and unpaid, seeks ovidenco in tho same manner against a corporation, McPartland must benefit by tho com parison, because that's tho way ho makes his living. Wo would suggest to the city coun cil that at- their next session thoy amend the licenso ordinance, raising tho tax of stock brokers who do a margin business. Tho licenso is now $15 per quarter, nnd it should bo made at least $1,000 a year. No argument is necessary in favor of a prohibitive license on margin trading. The star of a theatrical company traveling from Phoenix to Tucson, raised a howl because ho had to rido in a tourist, claiming "that his usual method of travel was in a standard Pullman drawing room. Thcro aro lots of actors who go out of Arizona in a side door Pullman and aro mighty glad thoy don't havo to walk. WAS NOTED RANCHER Evcc-.Gcrcninio and Murderous Eand Did Not Molest tho Late Colonel Hooker "Word was received in this city this week that Col. II. C. Hooker, ono of tho oldest and most widely known cattle mon and stock raisers in this section of tho territory, died suddonly at his homo in Los Angeles, on Thursday, of last week. Col. Hooker, for many years, has boon tho owner of n largen ranch on Bonita creek in this county. Ho camo to this section of tho country in tho early days. During the Indian troubles in Arizona, when tho people nnd their stock was at tho mercy of tho murderous Apaches, Col. Hooker, his mon, and his stock woro perfectly fafc, as in his dealings with tho Indians ho had always boon squaro with them, and old Chief Goron imo showed his apreciation by giving ordors that Col. Hooker's property should not be molested or his mon harmed. Tho many frionds of Col. Hookor will bo pained to learn of his death. Guar dian. Tho decline is attributed hero to speculative liquidation. The local tin market was weak and lowrr in sym pathy. Copper was lower 'in London, with spot 10s lower nt 30, 5s, 'and futures at 59, 10s. Locally tho. nurkct was weak and unchanged. Lead was 13s lower in London, at 13, and locally tho market continued Treak and declined to 3.50 to 3.00. Tito funeral of tho late Mills Van Wagcnen was held yesterday afternoon, services being conducted at tho Jones chapol and at tho grave by Rev. George Selby of St. John's Episcopal church. Tho "pall bearers were Jacob Suter, Henry Shoap, Frank Gill, Hinson Thom as, Charles Banker and Winthrop House, all of whom came here in tho early days. A largo number of friends followed the remains to their last rest ing place. The deceased camo to Globo in 1S78 from Gold Hill, Nov., and has resided hero continuously ever since. He was a graduate of Yalo law school anil was admitted to the bar in Arizona tho year ho cam here. Ho held a number of public offices, being district attor ney, probate judge and county super intendent of schools in tho 'SO's. Ho wns fifty five years of age and leaves his widow, ono brother, G. S.
