SPEAKER CANNON INTRODUCES
BILL FOR PRESERVATION OF
SAN XAVIER NINE MILES
FROM TUCSON
Is Ono of tho Most Ancient Churches
In America Movement Was Started
In Arizona Last Year By the Ter
ritorial Legislature.
Recently the resolutions passed joint
ly by tho two houses of tho Arizona
legislature nt tho last session wcro pre
sented to the lower house of congress
by Speaker Cannon. This resolution
asks congress to appropnato n consid
erable sum of money to bo used "in tho
work of preserving old San Xnvior
mision, nino miles from Tucson.
Tlio San Xnvier mission is tho oldest
church in Arizonnj in fact, it is ono of
tho most ancient ju Amcricn. A story
of tho pnBt fulf of interest to Arizona
and hor people la hold in ovory sqiuiro
foot of this old building, and if it is
allowed to fall into ruins owing to tho
lackof money, it would bo considered
a calamity in this city, and in fact, nil
or: tho torritory of Arizona.
The territory is proud, and justly so
d stories of the ancient past are
ound in every nook and corner of the
old building. It is one of tho principal
places of interest to strangcrB in the
entir6 west
Tho fact was called to the attention
of tho recent legislature that n consid
crablo sum of money must bo appro
priated for the preservation of the mis
slon or it would soon bo in ruins. Tlio
proposition was brought up by the mem
bers of the. Pima county delegation nnd
tlio call met with instant and hearty
approval from all Hides. A joint reso
lution nerds tho signature of the gov
ernor tho same ns a law and to his
credit it can be said that tho ono ask
ing congress to appropriate funds for
the preservation of Arizona's historical
building received the signature of Gov.
crnor Kibbey tho minute it reached his
ofl,ce. Tho exact amount that congress
will appropriate is not known, but it is
an assured fact that they will answei
this call, coming as it does from the
far west to save one of tho country's
most important historical buildings by
laying aside a goodly sum for the old
San Xavicr mission.
