Making the High School a Social Center
II
That a certain aiuouut of social lifo
id osaontinl to rounded human existonce
Is, I boliovo, rejidily granted by nil
when wo observe) tho results of a lack
of it in thoso w1m, either by choice or
forco of circumstances, are deprived of
it.- Tho old prospector who has lived
.for years alone iu thoMillh is nn inter
esting character, but surely n peculiar
nnd unonvinblo one. Wo call him old
and eccentric l)o doesn't "fit In"
with people any noro; ho ha developed
Strango habits lind queor idea1', and
probably ho hinnolf feels ho has lo3t
that nil brondeniog, all deepening pow
er of getting the. best from and giving
tho beat to, thosj of his kind.
Thero arc, undoubtedly, somo gonius
03 liko Thoroau, who thrivo bot in sol
itudo, but should you tnke tho avorngo
normal individual mid isolate him at
Wnldon by Thorenu's pond, ho would
shortly become gloomy and morose; in
flldo of a few weeks ho would bo look
ing wild-eyed and talking to himself,
and in all probability cursing tho pond
and tho forest and the little hut which
woro so dear to the author's heart. Tho
normal individual both needs and craves
society; not only the contact of our
fellows whoa wo work but when wo rost
or when wo play; nuil it is largoly tho
' play sido which has come to bo included
In our term, so much used and so much
abused, "socioty".
Among tho very best of our workors
and thinkers wo often find a tendency
to shun nnd scorn, to a cortain extent,
society ns wo understand the terra to
day, and thero is surely in our modorn
social customs much which-may well
bo shunned and scorned. But our so-
city as wo find it is tho dovclopmont of
many centuries; it comes down to us
through a long scries of growths and
changes from tho germ period, of tho
Middle Ages, nnd it must contain fac
tors which aro vital and essential. De
cry it, sneer at it, criticiso it as wo
may, each ono of us has a place ho
should occupy in tho social world and
tho least one can do is to fill that place
as best ho can, and do his part to im
prove and purify tho condition of this
very important phase of human, exis
tence. Tho boys and pirls who como'to High
school, aro just about tho ago whon they
.begin to realize thero, is such a thing
as a social world and that thero as a
place in it for them. I hold it to bo
within the field of school work to help
them find that place and to fill it to
tho best of their 'ability. Association
with pcoplo is counted as ono of tho
most valuablo gains in any educational
world; in college, for instance, I think
wo will agree, that the people wo met,
LOUISE R. GIBBS
tho different types of minds nnd char
acters wo woro thrown with, tho men
and women with whom we came in con
tact, somotimes forcibly and not alays
pnjoyably, gnvo us a broader nnd moro
valuablo ndurntion tluin wo gained from
our books. In the same way, although
in a less dogeo, is this truo of high
school lire, and tho student should havo
the opoprtunity of meeting socially
tho3o whom ho sees every day an his
class rooms. Tho boy or girl who simp
ly comes to school, nnd studies, and
goes home, misses much that ho"" or she
needs.
Another reason for emphasizing tho
toclal sido of school lifo is the happi
ness it brings, nnd it surely is within
our mission as teachers todo all in our
powor to make our boys nnd girls hap
py. And it is such fun to mako them
happy! Thero is nothing which brings
moro joy, if you lovo tho children ns
I bellovn every real tencher must, than
to see a crowd of school boys and girls
having a gonuiuely good timo. They
ought to bo happy and have all tho good
times it is within our powor to givoTbcen attacked on tho ground that the
thorn. Joy is truly tho rightful heri
tngo of all Gods' children nnd tho moro
of it wo can diffuso nnd infuse, tho
moro wo bnvo dono for humanity. I
vorily belicvo could wo keep people gen
uinely happy all tho time, wo could
invariably keep them good. This spirit
of happiness, too, brings about such a
different attitudo toward tho school nnd
tho school building. The respect and
awo for tho" halls of lenrning" is not
tho best attitudo to create. Let tho
pupil stand in awe of tho polico station
and bnvo revorence for the house of
worship, but for their school a lovo
which aproacbes their feeling for tho
home. I should feel very badly if I
thought my boys and girls wanted to
shako their fiat at the High school build
ing and pass by on the other sido of tho
street on Saturdays, or thnt tho only
thought they had of tho rooms and halls
was of a burden of work and .routine.
Givo them somo good times right in-tho
placo whero they work and the mem
ory of tho pleasures will put a certain
glamour over tho prosiest of school
rooms. Tho only room in ray own high
school that I remember loving wns the
twelfth grado, for it was not until tho
fourth year as wo met to prepare for
graduation, that our class came togeth
er in any social way.
The attitude of the children toward
each other I find much benefitted by
moro social lifo in tho school. General
ly boys and girls form their own friend
ships without any assistance from par
ents or teachers, but quito often we find
a shy one who is left out and who
ueods many opportunities boforo,hoOr
sho can mako friends,, and wo all need
friends at any ago. Strange prejudices
often arjso when people havo simply a
sight acquaintance which aro ovorcome
whoa tho pupils learn to know each
other. I know ono fino senior girl who
hnd taken an unreasonable dislike to
a littlo sophomore girl bwauso of the
way sho combed her hnir. Then the
two girls woro gotten togethor on tho
basket-ball court, whero "dos" on hair
counted for nothing, tho prejudice was
shortly ovorcome.
Tho attitudo of tho boys toward tho
girls and tho girls toward tho boys, that
very difficult and delicate thing to han
dlo during the high school period, is,
I firmly boliovo, mnde moro rational
nnd scnaiblo by a goqd deal of social
contact. The boys ought to havo girl
friends; they need each other as much
then ns in after life, and tho only prob
lem is to keep theso friendships reason,
able and wholesomo, nnd as free from
sentimentality as possible. I am well
awaro. thatthjs position of mine has
High school social gatherings engender
foolish lovo affairs betweon tho toys
nud girls, but it has been my experience
that tho young people who know each
other well, who aro togethor on the nth
lotla grounds and the evening social
gatherings aro much less apt to bo silly
about their friendships than those who
aro not.
Do what wo may wo cannot head off
who is liked best among tho boys and.
at all suro I should if I could. I don't,
belicvo my High school "cases" hurt
mo any, and I wouldn't havo misted
them for a good deal; and I verily bo
lievo that a frank confession from all of
you would bring much the samo verdict.
Of course, once in a while, some pretty
littlo girl loses bor head over too much
attention and has to bo talked to as
if you were her Dutch uncle; or somo
dreamy lnd forgets to get his geometry
lesson whilo he fills the .fly-leaf of his
book with the name of his lady love.
But if you know what is the matter
with theso particular lads and lasses
it is much easier to deal with them and
to givo a timely word of warning. I
should feel T were not well posted for
tho best school work did I not know
who is liked best among the boys and
girls.
Ono of tho best results which I have
noted from the Eocial life in the school,
is the spirit of democracy which is
bound to be fostered, provided tho so
cial lifo is kept general for tho whole
school. Tho greatest mistako which can
bo made, I believe, is to let tho natural
leaders monopolize the social functions

and allow tho backward once to b left
oat. Bat if the various kinds of eocial
events aro planned and tho affairs man
aged so that nono aro admitted, thon
a)l havo an oqual opportunity and tho
result as nocccssarily democratic. Sup
poso thov mayor's daughter does dance
with tho washwoman's son! It is a
good thing for both of them, provided
sho is a nico girl and ho is a nice boy.
Force of circumstances ,will separato
them soon enough into different social
strata. Lot tho public school uso its
leveling influence between tho rich and
poor ns long ns possible. I want every
member of our high school to feel that
ho or sho has a placo which Is just
as good as any othor placo in tho high
school socinl world, and that if distinc
tions aro mado thoy aro based on merit
and ability. I boliovo this spirit of
social doroocracy is a vory, very impor
tant thing to fostor in our country, In
this day and ago when everything is
tending toward class distinction, and I
sco no other institutions which can fos
ter such a spirit than tho church and
tho school.
In mentioning the nids to tho school
lifo from the introduction of the social
sido, let mo not forget tho totally dig
fcrent attitudo ot occasions between
teachers and pupils. Tho teacher and
pupil who havo only a class-room a-
.quaintanco know each other very sup
erficially, for neither ono is or can bol
quito natural under thoso conditions.
Thoy aro, unavoidably on different
planes, nnd if a pupil see you only un-4
der such circumstances ho is apt to gain
a totally wrong impression of you and
your attitudo toward him. But if yo"
moet the boy in a game of tonnis, o
play with the girl on tho basket-fan!'
court; if you dance with them in th'
cvonmg and havo a good visit abo'
pomcthing which, has nothing to do with
history or mathematics or Latin, tho
boy or girl learns to know you, to up
dcratnr.d that you aro human and tha
ypu think and feel as. they do about
many inings. unuer sucn circumstanc
es it is easy to build up a good comrade
ship which makes them listen more-' at
tentively to what you say in school and
brings nbout an affection which has far
moro influenco than tho scoldings or
dignified disertations one may deliver
from his littlo pedestal ns teacher.
In tho practical working out of" tho
social idea in Prcscott, wo havo resorted
to all tho familiar methods and a few
perhaps which aro not. T,ho athelcties
aro a tremendous help tho foot-hall
and tho track work keep the boys to
gether in interested groups, while the
tennis clnbs supply tho same things for
tho smaller and younger boys and girls.
Tho basket-ball teams aro about as
strong a feature as wo have for the
girls alone, although the girls' gled
club of last year was another good
plan to got tho girls together.
Littlo incidental things help. Ono of
my girls this year has come into school
from a ranch some distance away, and
she has no plinno whero she is staying
in town. Sho spoko ono day of how
much sho mised her music, and I asked
her to nso tho high school piano when
sho wanted to. Often now sho stays
after school and plays, and I have no
ticeil some of tho girls staying with her
and gathering round the piano to listen
or sing. It gave mo the idea that we
might work up very informal little mus
icnls after school occasionally.
But theso plans Rro all for groups
and I bcliovo it is a wonderful help,
to havo tho high school all together so
cially. Friday afternoon wo havo al
lowed the pupils who cared to, and that
meant tho largo majority, to stay for an
hour or so to dance and visit. Gener
ally all tho teachers stayed and always
somo of them. This waa tho best meth
od I belicvo of all to get tho pupils ac
quainted and bring out the more retic
ent ones. Onco in about six weeks we
plan for an evening dancing party
given in the school auditorium, to which
wo invited all tho members of the high
whool nnd their friends, nnd wo urge
particularly tho attendance of tho par
ents. Tho children certainly enjoy
theso gatherings nnd I have found them
to bo innocont, hnppy good times for
all of us. By means of tho dance many
little social customs may incidentally
bo taught which all young pcoplo should
know, and those evenings aro apt to
bring out caso of manner and self-as-suranco
just at the most gawky and
awkward ago. Only the person who has
grown up with self-poise knows how
much it moans to attain it early in life.
Unfortunately, wo havo been handi'
capped somowhat in our plans by the
judgment of, thoso who can only see
frivolousncss and nonsenso in what we
aro attempting to do.
Tho young folks of high school age
aro going to demand social life, and if
it is possiblo thoy are going to go't it
somewhere. Whj' not havo as much of
it as possiblo under the guardianshit
and oversight of tho school? Sucl
work is within tho provinco of the
church, why not of tho school! Ant'
even moro effectually, because thf
school is not hampered by traditionn'
objection to certain forms of amuse
ment' and can mako tho society lift
oven moro attractive whilo just as help
ful. Ought not tho two to work han
in hand to givo our young pooplo tho

Ono of tho first fruits of the fight
