A petition asking that the Santa Cat
alina mountains bo converted into a
national game preserve is being circu
lated in Tucson and is .being very gen
erally signed. 'It is'pointed out that
should the government mako the Santa
Catalinas a gamo preserve and prevent
hunting therorr numerous additions
would be added to tho animal colony,
and in a short time tho country all
around tho reserve would become a
hunter's paradise. '
May Install Third Furnace
A third jacket maybe added to tho
Sasco smelter within a short time, giv
ing the plant a capacity of 1,050 tons
every twenty-four hours. Tho smelter
at present has a capacity of 700 foiiH
per day, but developments of mines
tributary to tho smeHer seem to make
an incrcaso of capacity necessary.

BENSON, Nov. 21. A young "bad
man" named Van Vnclcr, who for
somo timo has been wanted by tho ter
ritorial authorities for several crimes,
is now thought to bo lying dead on the
desert somewhoro north of horc, or iu
hiding seriously wounded following a
duel with Ranger Palmer Sunday eve
Van Vnclcr was arrested somo timo
ago by Ranger McAda and whilo be
ing taken to tho county jail at Tomb
stone, escaped from tho train. Sunday
Ranger Palmer obtaincd'a cluo to the
whereabouts of the young desperado,
who was said to bo hiding near tbo Har
mon ranch, about two miles from here.
Ho started out early in the evening
alono to capture his man, and when a
sort distanco from tho Harmon house
'ho was accosted by Van Vaelor. Bcforo
tho ranger got within revolver rnngo
he called to him to throw up his hands.
Van Vaolcr threw up his hnnds, but nt
tho same timo opened fire with his six
shooter. Palmer replied with his riflo and ho
knocked tho revolver out of his hand
with nnother shot. It waa growing dark
by this timo and the ranger again called
upon Van- Vaelcr to surrender. Tho
latter then turned nnd disapepared into

man for some distance, being guided by
blood stains along tho trail, but ho fin
ally gavo up tho search and returned to
"Benson to organize a search party.
Sinco that time continuous search has
been made for Van Vaeler, but no trace
linn been found. Tho officers bolievo
that he has either made his escape. after
doubling back to Benson or that ho
is dead somewhere on tho desert.
