A Day's Doings in Arizona
Mrs. William L. Stiles, in a Jotter to
tho Bisbeo Reviow, eonflrniH tho publish
ed report that tho deputy shoriff going
under tho nnmo of William Larkin,
who was killed by a man named Barr,
at Kings River, in Humboldt county,
Nov., was her husband, William L.
Stiles, the notorious Arizona bandit.
Tho Sulphur Springs valley is rapidly
filliifg up with Bottlers. All tho land in
tho vicinity of Willcox, and practically
all tho valley between a point twenty
miles north of Willcox, southward to
Douglas, is, or was, government land
subject to entry. The water in tho
valley is very near tho surface in.many
places, ns in tho vicinity of Willcox,
being from twelve to forty feet, and in
seeming incxhaustiblo quantities. Tho
nows that professor James Douglas has'
donated a sufficient amount of money to
carry on experiments in dry farming in
Sulphur Spring vulloy has also attracted
to that locality.
Last Sunday morning tho lodging
house occupied by tho employees of the
Hotel Morcnci in the mining camp of
that name was destroyed by fire, tho or
igin of which is unknown. Tho roomers
lost most of their personal effects, ami
tho building, owned by tho Detroit (Cop
per company was totally destroyed.
Settlers from distant states aro buy
ing land and filing on homesteads in
the vicinity of Duncan on tho Qila river
in Graham county, a rich agricultural
section.
Tho guns which wcro confiscated from
tho Douglas city officials who strayed
across the lino after a trip, to San Ber
nardino and proceeded to shoot at some
of President Diaz ducks, havo been re
turned by order of tho Sonora state
authorities.
Tho cold snap which followed in tho
wako. of tho big storm has prevailed
far south and invaded tho ,Yuam coun
try, whero thoso who had overcoats
packed away with,moth balls, resurrect
ed and wore them with evident pride.
Tho Colorado river at Yuma regis
tered 27.5 feet lest Saturday, showing
a riso of about eight feet. Sunday night
there was a further riso to 28.5. Some
timid people were fearful that tho lovee
would not stand the pressure of anoth
er riso coming from tho Grand canyon
and the Little Colorado. The Yuma
Sun says their fears arc groundless.
Tho Yuma Enterprise says that, bar
ring an extremely high Hood, tho Colo
rado river will be closed at Laguna by
Christmas. This is tho promise of the
reclamation engineers. Then tho per
manent dam for the channel will be
completed in a very few weeks.
A big scoop wheel has been installed
at tho Colorado river below Yuma
which lifts a good volumne of water
out of tho river for tho irrigation
farming lands, f
of
Tho Little Colorado river was on tho
rampage during tho storm last week.
Near Winslow tho Santa Fo pump houso
was swept away and two bents of tho
railroad bridgo were carriod away,
ly all tho' streams wero out of their
banks. Tho snowfall on tho mountains
was heavy.

DOUOLAS, December 22. Dr. L. D.
Rickctts, gonernl manager of the
Grccne-Cananca company, was a visitor
in tho city recently on his way to El
Paso on company business.. Ho may go
further cast from there and expects to
return to tho big Sonora camp before
Christmas. Dr. Rickctts is highly pleas
ed with tho manner in which mining
and smelting operations havo been con
ducted, and tho remarkable decrease in
the cost of production which has been
made sinco tho resumption of activities
following tho long suspension.
"Tho production for November,''
said tho doctor to a nowspapcr rcprt
tentative, "was over 3,600,000 pounds
and will' probably bo in that vicinity
for the current month as no increase in
operations has been made. It is im
possible to toll at this time when the
idle furnaces will be blown in and that
is not worrying us any. Tho contral
air plant will bo installed as soon as
possible and it will bo used exclusively
for tho mines, as wo intond to supply
all the shafts with air from this plant.
It will bo several months beforo the cen
tral air plant is installed."
Dr. Iticketts stated that considerable
interest is being taken In tho Cananca
district by outsido interests and that a
gradual resumption of operations by
outside companies is now beginning.
WASHINGTON, December-21. That
tho now cabinet in Venezuela may have
an important bearing on the relations
of that country with tho United States
is the opinion of state department ofli-
, cinlH.
This depends, however, on the consti
tution of the new body and whether the
vice president and tho element compos
ing tho cnbinct arc willing to resume
diplomatic negotiations with tho United
States. Tho elimination from the new
cabinet of thoso who were closely af
filiated with Castro is gratifying to of
ficials hero who hope that under tho
new order some progress may be made
toward adjustiug the claims of tho
United States ngninst Venezuela which
havo been pending for a long time.
If Venezuela shows a disposition to
rcsumo diplomatic relations with the
United States, 'tho state department
would lend its aid in that direction
without hesitation.
