Novombor the youth has been confined
in tho reformatory in Jcflersonvlllo
awaiting trial. Tho bravado Jio dis
played when first placed behind tho bars

looking forward to his trial with a full
realization of tho fate that probably
awaits him.
Noal will b0 tried for tho murder
of J. Hungary Fawcett, who was tho
cashier of tho Merchants National bank
of Now Albany. On tho morning of
November 11 last tho young bandit en
tered the bauk and after commanding
everybody to throw up his hnnds, "aud
got. m the vault," began shooting.
Cashier Fawcett died almost instant
ly after being shot through tho neck aud
chest. John K. Woodward, president of
tho bank, wns shot and dangerously
wounded. Following tho shooting tho
murderer rushed lrom tho bank and
tried to make his escape iu an auto
mobile which ho had taken from tho
curb in front of tho residence of the
owner. Ho commanded the negro chaf
feur at the point of tho gun to drive
him down the street at top speed. But
tho chafTeur, paralyzed with terror aud
apparently incapable of action, suj still.
Noal jumped from tho car and sent a
bullet through the negro's body.
Turning down the river bank a dis
tance of several blocks, tho murderer
ran. with great speed. Ho quickly appro
priated a skill nt the dock and was on
his way to the Kentucky side before the
startled citizens of New Albany" knew
what had happened. An alarm was giv
en through a megaphone from a dredge
boat and in a short time the polico had
started in pursuit in a fast motor boat,
had captured their man und had brought
him to shoro, only to confront the new
peril of lynching.
By a clever ruse the jiolico stood off
the crowd that thronged tho dock as
the boat landed. Commanding the pris
oner to lie down, the police announced
that the man had taken poison and was
dead, meanwhile carrying him to the
patrol wagon and giving tho word to
Irivc ahead. The bandit Was taken to
the New Albany jail. A few mouths
later to cscajto tho mob, he was re
moved to the reformatory at JcfTcrson
ville. Noal, who is but 1" years old, is a
son of William .7. Noal, a furniture
dcealer in Louisville. Tho family form
erly lived in Knoxvillc, Tenn. Tho
father and other members of tho fam
ily have employed counsel and will use
every effort to savo the younglcspcrado
from the olectric chair. It is probable
that tho defeTiso will be based on a
plea of insanity.

Within the next few weeks, the cor

be laid, and iu order that elaborate and
impressive ceremonies may mark this
celebration, a committco consisting of
F. D. Smith, J. G. Oldfiold and Larry
Tulloch has been appointed to arrange
all details. .
As tho cornerstone will not bo laid
until after tho foundations for the new
building are complete, the formal cele

tho structure will probably not bo held
until early in March. Work ou the foun

been commenced nnd it will require
