We eall attention to the an *ouncement of the Natches Fair to be held there November 15-20. 18017. Natchez is a delightful city . to visit during a festive occsion; Her people are very courteous antd ,opitahbe to strangers, and .v-erv * effort is made to give themn a good time. Many of the citiz,~ns of Tou sas are either intives of Atthn:r K and the adjoining river counties of Mlissimippioor their ancestors were, and a strt~g chain of sympathy and interest binds them to thbo City'of the Bl'ffes. We Lear that the Fair Grounds at the Concord place, the former residence of the Spanish Governor of Mississippi, are rapidly being prepared, so as to have the grounds ready for the fair i November. Foflowing is the tnouncement the management has issued: "In addition to notices through the public press, the Natchez Fair Association takes this method of announcing an Agricultural, Me shanieal and 8tock Exposition to /-: heMl in the City of Natchez, *oma November 16th to 20th incln sive. Prompted by the earnest tish to advance and promote the material advantage of our entire amestism, and especially that triba Sta to Natehes, the managers of I .--4his enterprise will spare no effort I tikshow the phenomenal advance-i . .Set of this glorious region, in sek manner as to ix the atten tion of the whole country. . "aStches, beautiful in situa tioo, like a queen, sits radiant upon its sun orowned bluffs, look ing down sheer 250 feet to where the swift current of the Mississippi 4 dashes its golden eptay beneath the cliffs. Beyond lies the fair i demesne of Louisiana in all its I pristine glory, even as when the ] Chevalier du Ponte founded this I City of the Bluffs. To the right and left the great river curves like i enveloping arms about the green s shore. 'The Spanish explorers I came looking for gold, and found the gold of sunbeams lighting up 1 this beauteous country, the long I shafts of sunshine pointing like . golden angers down the mighty ( river and touching the Natchez c "The development of this fertile t section, promotion of agriculture, c Ibilding of railroads, carrying of a the beacon light of progress into I ]emote districts, attracting capi- r e and immigratio, is the mtive 1 A at this undertaking. The Vicklurg Herald has the y following spicy notice of Major ; Lamar Fontaine, who is well d known throughout. the South, par y ticular.ly for his opiulious claim to d the author,:hip of the poem "All .- Quiet Along the Pototmac," , hich : wan written tby Mrs. Beers and )f tirst appeared in Harper's Wookly. , Those of our readers who have y met the Major will enjoy what the o Herald says of him: "Though uncorked and on tap [a always, Lamar Fontaine, the Baron r unhachause of the Mississiippi Delta, like good wine improves with age. At the Nashville re g union we ob,,serve that he has added s some choice new legends to his repertoire; which havo gotten in the New York World. One is a t certificate from Stonewall Jack son, which reads thusly: h " 'I believe that during his r service with me as sharpshooter, ,f Lamar Fontaine killed more of the enemy than were killed by any o company in my command.' "This is pretty good, but a cer tificate from Gen. Lee sees the raise t and goes better. It is to the effect e that this famous sharpshooter, ~ with his mouth, had killed 00 men is 60 minutes. Lamar Fon f taine, like Artenus Ward's kan t garoo, is 'an amoosin meas,' but he makes a great mistake in not writ n ing a book." Hox. Taos. M. Wazn, of this - parish, took an active part in the t convention of SBhool Superintend ents in New Orleans last-week. We e copy from the T.-D. db follows: "Hon. T. M. Wade, of Tensas, r spoke on the 'Relation o1 the s Schoel BMard of Eduption to the a Parish Boards.' He contended s that the question of the collection t of the poll tax was of paramount a importance, and urged the parish superintendents to confer with the s parish school boards and police I juries relative to enforcing the "payment of this tax. In Tensas parish a collector was employed with most satisfactory results. r Owing to the employment of some one to look after this matter, to gether with the co-operation of those interested in the collection of the tax, about 50 per cent, amounting to $2428, was collected last year. Mr. Wade said there was always great difficulty in col lecting the poll tax from day la borers, and at one time they were exempt ?rom payment in T'ensas, parish. The Attorney General was finally consulted about the mat ter and that officer held that this class of citizens were liable to the tax, and since then every effort( had been made to collect it. "Mr. Wade urged that the text oks adopte~t by the State Board of Education he used in thei schooli. In some instances the. offioial list ~hs ignored and other books hought. ' In his own parish, I he said, local dealers had been I charging more than the price reg ulated by the State board, and when sploken to about it said they I were compelled to do so, as they j were only allowed a discount of 10 per cent by the wholesale deal ers. This, Mr. Wade said, was a mistake. The State board has t fixed the discount to be allowed f retail dealers at 20 per cent. When local dealers charged more ' than the list price in any locality he said text booke could be had at h regular rates by applying to the y parish school boards. "Mr. Wade said there was a matter of which he desired to i speak. but he did so with the great- a est delicacy That was the high schools. He said that he had found, when serving in the Legis- P lature, by expressions from those h with whom he met, that there was ei a strong and growing opposition a to these schools. This feeling, he said, appeared to be traceable to the belief that the parish boards P often appropriated an undue N amount of the school funds to these ' high aschools, to the detriment of ol the grammar or common schools. Mr. Wade said he was a friend of the high echools, bat he warned the superintendents that there was a growing feeling of hostility, ad as unless they were careful there a would be a reaction and their 81 growth would be retarded." -to Begkl's tratca 8a'vA. of The Best alve nla the world Vor i" -ta, ores, Ulcers, 8alt Bhema, of r evr bes Tetter, CObpped Ca RaId Chilblatis Corns, mad all wl hkt.a ruptsons, and poeltively in St,, files, or no pay) reqotred, It s guarasteed to give perfeet satme f Ia4tion or money refunooded.
