LATEST NEWS IN LOUISIANA Number of Parishes Will Hold Fairs This Year. THE SEASON'S STIAWIEE CROP Will Bring Growers Half a Million Dollars. Number of Special Elections to Be Held. Other Items. According to the reports which have been received by the State Board of Agriculture and Immigra tion a number of parishes propose organizing parish fair associations and holding fairs this fall that have never been included in the list of fair holding parishes. Secretary Jas tremski, of the Louisiana State Board of Agriculture and Immigration, will leave Baton Ruoge the first part of next month for a tour of the State in the Interest of parish fairs, and he will visit those parishes where the organization of a fair association has been undertaken. He will assist the different circuits in arranging the dates for the fairs just as was done in the north Louisiana circuit. It is practically settled that the other fairs will adopt the resolution of the North Louisiana Association and cut out entirely the free pass feature. The idea in the Hepburn bill will be extened to all of the parish fairs of Louisiana. Special Elections. Governor Sanders has issued proc lamations calling for the following special elections, all elections fixed for April 27, to fill unexpected vacan cies: In the Fourth Ward of East Baton Rouge Parish, to fill a vacancy caused by the resignation of J. K. Laycock; in the Parish of Plaque mine, to name a clerk for the Twen ti-ninth Judicial District, to fill a va cancy caused by the death of A. P. Alberti; police juror for the Second Ward of the Parish of Lafourche, caused by the death of John M. Walsh; police Juror for the Second Ward of Madison parish, caused by the resignation of Henry M. Floyd; police juror for the teventh Ward of the Parish of Iberville, caused by the resignation of John S. Borgas; po lice juror for the Fifth Ward of the Parish of Assumption, caused by the resignation of Theophile Bourdreau. Contract for Grain Elevator. The Alexandria Milling and Ele vator Company, capitalized at $25, Price, of Kansas City, for the erec 000, has let a contract to G. G. tion of a large grain elevator. To Offer Beter Parses. The Acadia Parish Fair Asocia tion has appointed committee to so licit premiums for the fair this fall. It is the plan to cut out large purses for high-marked harness horses and encourage country horses by offer ing more and better purses for par ish horses and drivers. Wormser & Son was broken into at Jeanerette and as far as can be ascertained about $300 of goods stolen. Entrance was ef fected through the back door. A hat was left behind by one of the parties, which bears the stamp of Kraum & Kaha, of Monroe, La. The safe in the store was also tampered with, but not damaged. The subject was the emtab.shmant of an apegricultaral high school at Calhouna, and the matter wasu fully discuassed by a number of speakers. Baton Rouge will entertain from April 30 to May 1 fully 1,000 high school pupils from the different high schools of Louisiana, who will be the guests of the citizens of the Capital City during the State High School rally. Fifty high schools will be represented in the different contests. Five hundred children are expected to come as contestants and as many more as "rooters" for their schools and spectators of the event. The railroads in Louisiana will give a rate of one far plus 25 cents for the occasion, and all of the children who attend and the teachers who ac company them will be entertained in Baton Rouge homes without cost. Seaion's Strawberry Crop. The strawberry season opened at Independence, when two cars of ber ries were shipped from here. The Independence Farmers' Association shipped about 90 per cent of this amount. Monday there were at least five cars of berries shipped from here. From all indications this will be the banner season of the straw berry crop. Judging from present prospects there will Le at least 400 cars shipped from here this season, which will mean at least an average of half a million dollars to the straw berry growers. .--.---4--- Will Hold Election .n Cigar Boxes. The parish division fi,.t is still the subject of much di:cussion at Opelousas and througlast the Parish of St. Landry. The divisionists de clare that, notwithstanding the in Junction sued out in the District Court, they will hold the election in cigar boxes, while the antidivision ists say this would be m-'e child's play, in the face of the injunction suit and would avail nothing, even though every participant would vote one way. Bank Cashier Rescues Three. Smith Price, cashier of the Bank of Logansport, rescued a young lady teacher in the High School and two of her young pupils from drowning in McKay Lake. A boat containing the three capsized in six feet of wa ter and Mr. Price, without waiting to remove his coat or shoes, plunged in and succeeded in bringing all safe ly to shore. Effort to Extend School Term. As the funds for the maintenance of the public schools in St. Tam many Parish are about exhausted an effort is being made to devise means whereby the Ramsay school can re main open for some time yet. This school has had an average attend ance throughout the school term of about eighty-seven children. To Recover bhortage. Governor Sanders has instructed Attorney General Guion to take steps on behalf of the state to recover from the Bonding Company the $7, 253.80 which R. L. Guillotte, former Recorder of the Conveyance oece for the Parish of Orleans, is alleged to be short in his accounts. Mr. Guil lotte is under a $15,000 bond. Missing Contractor Returns. J. H. Carlin, the Rayne contrac tor, who disappeared from Crowley about ten days ago, has returned home. He was found by his brothel in-law, W. M. Hearn, on a Southern Pacific train west bound. He appears to have been worrying over business matters and wandered away. Girl Crushed to Death. A message from Greenwood, La.. Peters, President of the Parish Board of Health, of Winn field, reports there are 23 cases of smallpox throughout the parish, scattered at Dodson, Atlanta, St. Maurice and this place. Under the rigid restrictions imposed the dis ease is disappaering. New Bridge Built. The railroad bridge of St. Joseph's Abbey, which was washed away about two weeks ago by the high stage of the Bogue Falara River, has been replaced by another sub stantial structure and will be ready for traffic by the end-of the present week. Attempt at Burglary. An unsuccessful attempt was made several nights ago to burglarise the Pacific Express office at Natchitoch es. /The outer door of the safe was opened and the knob and bolt of the inner door were broken, but the doors never opened. To Erect Powder Magazine. The Aetna Powder Company, of Chicago, has obtained ten acres of land in the Bayou Robert Swamp, about three miles from Alexandria, and will build a brick powder mag azine. A New Orleans man will have charge. Sugar Plantation Sold. The Lower Terrabonne Refining and Manufacturing Company has paid $75,000 to Mrs. Frank E. Posey for the Presqu'lle sugar plantation, and the minors of A. Ovide Gueno five miles below Houma. Leasing Oil Lands. Oilmen are still visiting Grand Cane and vicinity to secure leases on oil lands. Between 12,000 and 15, 000 acres have been leased, but some of the best lands are yet to be secured. Young Man Kills Himself. At Abbeville, Felix Campbell, a young man whose home was in the southern portion of this parish, kill ed himseif by shooting in the breast. It is not known whether the trag edy was accidental or otherwise. Protest Against Gambling. Governor Sanders received a pro test from citizens of Caddo Parish against violations of the Gambling Law and operation of blind tigers at Oil City. PlftyFour Indictmens Beturmed. At Abbeville, the grand jury has made a partial report, returning fif ty-four true bills and seventy-six not true bills. The most serious charge is forgery. Loses Arm in Machinery. Walter King, a young man, had his right arm torn off in the planing mill at Eros. The injured member was amputated by Dr. M. M. Hearn. Activity in Oil Field.
