ug letter to the VeftUs'
ost Masmter throughout -the
eountry wiose oloese a term
imls for rural route. with request
thba as much publicity as .lsi
ble be made of same. For inform
ation of the interested in this
parish, we give the letter below:
From a recent count made by ru
rat carriers in one of the counties in
the State of New York of coins de
posited by patrons in theirboxes for
the purchase of stamp supplies, it
was found tlhtt each carrier in the
county was collectisg an average of*
115 one-sent coins each week.
This average applied to. all the
routes in operation throughout the
country would give the enormous
total of about 300,000,000 one-cent
As most of these coins are deposi
ted loose in boxes, it is desirable
that you and the rural carriers, in
a.tactful and polite way, put fo
your best efforts to induce- patrons
to provide themselves with stamp
supplies in advance of their needs,
and to equip their boxes with suit
able coin-holding reeceptac4es. It
euld be explained to patrons that
the picking of loose coins from
boxes not only results in needless
hardship and sufferingto carriers in
winter weather, delays the delivery
And collection of the mails, but
frequently results in actual money
loss to the carriers, for if, in collect
ing coins from boxed, they drop
them into the snpw or on the
ground without. recovery, they. are
required to replace the amount out
of their own funds.
