Th Tensas Gazette. ST.JOSEPH, - - - LA. d FRIDAY, OCTOBER 14, 9110 1 ABNER E. GREEN, - - EIurro. f t V&VIRIPTION YVKARLY w S In Advance. 1.0 The lectures delivered at the y Court House on last Friday night a were indeed int'llectual treats and ' were greatly enjoyed by every one present. Dr. IHnamilton Jones, rep- t resenting the State Board of Health, gave a most interesting and instruct ive talk, accompanied by imagic lantern slides, illustrating in all their horror and loathsomeness the the several plagues to which flesh is heir, viz: tulerculosis, small-pox, I book-worm or pelegra, yellow fever 3 and other contagious dliseases, alnd t outlined the course of sanitation necessary to the eradication of these pestilences. D)r. Jones' proved a, most interesting talker and showedr complete mastery of his theme. Dr. Harris, State Superintendent, also made a most instructive talk in the interest of education and his re marks were greatly enjoyed by all present, especially teachers and friends of education. Messrs. J. E. Ford of ('hristol Springs, Miss., E. A. McDaniel of Veto, Franklin county, Miss., and W. R. Cupit and D. H. Arnold of Meadville, Miss., came to St. Jo msph this week in search of two white men by name of Riley Bead man, alias Jourdon, alias Easman, and Clarence Hickenbottom, charged with stealing a mule and buggy from Mr. Arnold, in Meadville, and carried up to Christol Springs, where were sold to Mr. Ford. The culprits were traced from point to point in Mississippi and finally to Teneas parish and were located on "Clydes dale," near the Tensas River, where they were arrested and were brought to St. Joseph and placed in jail. Waiving requisition, they returned to Franklin county last night, ac companied by the gentlemen named. The Greater New York Floating Theatre, presenting a big dramatic production with some twenty peo ple in the cast, will appear at St. Joseph on Tuesday next the .18th Inst. This is one of the most pop. ular shows on the river, and its owner, Mr. Price, has been in the business for the past thirty years and is well known to practically every body up and down the river. His show is this season presenting the highly sensational play "Be pond the Rockies," in four acts. The many friends of Mr. S. D Farrar, for so many years a most useful citizen and official and large property owner of Tensas parish, were delighted to see him in St. Joseph this week after an absence of about two years, during which time Mr. Farrar has been engaged in the mining business ini the west. He is very optomistic about his prospects in the west and feels con Adent that the mine in which he is interested will plan out well. Mr. Farrar is looking well. The weather the past week has bee rainy and generally cloudy with warm days and cool nights. The frequent rains have had most damaging effect on the crope, has eded to shorten the product and jtained the staple. Ray has also rered by the bad weather and a great per cent of the pea crop has rotted in the field. The rains, how ever, have let up the last few days and dry weather may now follow. Prof. Stringbeld, principal of St. Joseph High School, has had an extra room added tom the school building to serve as library room, something that has long been need ed. The room is large and light and airy and conveniently located and nicely finished and will add ery much to the convenience of the school and appearance of the building. Mr. W. Pasternas of Monroe has hlasted in St. Joseph and taken the Steen building, having sueeeeded Mr. Leon Karpe, who shipped his goods to Delhi, La. Mr. Pasternac 1pa opened with a very large and ulect stock of goods and asks a share of the public patronage. He expect. to move his family to St. Joseph about the 1st November. Ibe crowd that left hens last Sun day morning for Monroe to serve as jurors in the Federal court returned Tuesday, due to the illness of Judge Sutuen, and his consequent ina-* Wnti hs b.ou sns. Thy ivill prob. THE DANGEROUS HUOSE FLY. The following summannry of the danger to ihuman life of the house fly, as explained by 1)r. Jones in his of lecture last Friday night, is of SL special interest and should be care- a' fully considered and suggestions for I their extinction' followed: n Flies are the inmost dangerous insects at we have. They arte iiimnchli ore danger ous than imts or hornet; these may sting o you, an thile sting is jpainful, but you )soon get over the pain. Flies do much d 1 more harm than this. They walk over s) tiltlhy places like sewers and garbage cans, i and after eating the filthy food which they find there,. they comie into your house d and walk on the fold you eat, carrying p on their feet the tiny germs wlhichl livett r Sin the tilth just as you live in a Ihoutse. n, These germs are not only tilthy and dis- t1 gusting, but many of thernI cause such i1 e iserses as typlihoid fever, cholera infant- tI 1 un anid sunmUer comuplaint. When the , flies bring them frtom some dirty place to u . your fIswl or leave somie of them when .a it they crawl on your face or hauls, you may swallow these germs without know- tl ing it and he taken ill with ,onie of these r, e diseases. so the fly that seems so hlardess 4 a may dto you much more Iharm than a tbee I or a hornet. cn(r-ens should tI I'platcedl at all doors and windows during the warm weather, to keep flies out of thie Ihouse. If incon venient to scaren all the ramnis at least c -thmse in which fond is kept should cer I tainly I' wscrened; and if there is sick d nlws the house, fles should Lw kept from C the sick-rnsi., so that they may not car ry germs from the sick person to the rest II of the family. Children may help to keep flies fromn e Df swarming in around houses, and fromn t d carrying genus of eickness fromn one per son to another. In thIe first place, they . should not buy candy, fruit or other food .o which is left in front of stores or any where else where flies may feed and walk on it. Flies lay their eggs chiefly in stable Smanure, and if this is left without screens d or other covers to keep the flies away, yy great numnbers will be hatched in every td stable. If you know of stores where food e is not covered from flies, or of stables that have swarms of thenm around, get your ts father or mother to write to the Board in of Health about tlhem, and the Board as will make the store-keepers or stablemen I obey its rules. But hefore you report oth- t er peoplle for being careless and dirty and rt so making it pssiible for flies to become anuisancee, tw sure that your own house il. is clean, and that no garbage-cans or ed boxes are left uncovered to attract fles. c- If you and all the people you know d will follow this advice, there will not be nearly so many flies to plague you in hot ig weather, and there will not be nearly so much sickness and death, especially among children, as now. o-i ------- t.
