The Tensas Gazette. ST. JOSEPH, - - - LA. FRIDAY, OCTOBEI'i 21, 1 911( ABNER E. GREEN, - - Eonnoa. gUUSCRIPTIUS VKARLY IM AdEasure. 1..) THE APPROACH OF DECISION DAY. It remains for the ' ,ple, of I,)uis lana to determine at the polls so, ten days hence, whether or not there shall be a great international expo sition held in the (City of New ()r leans in 1915. If the people ,f the State refuse to back up New ()r leans in her efforts to qualify fr Congressional recgnition as the Ex position ('ity there will lse an end of the matter and the greatest op portunity that has ever comne our way will us by. It cannot be impressed too strong ly upor the public mind that the voters have it in their power to give New Orleans a winning chan'ce in the fight before Congress, or to set tle the matter finally and definite ly favor of San Francisco. Congre-ss will not award the Exposition to New Orleans unless the people 4how at the polls that they want it. New Orleans will vote overwhelmingly for the tax, but an adverse major ity in the country parishes, even though that majority should be overcome by the city vote, will, by indicating dissentions on the sub ject among our own people, invite Congress to decide unfavorably to the Southern metropolis. A small vote in the country even though it should be favorable, would be dan gerous: for Congress is not likely to force a great Exposition upon a peo ple who are unwilling or indifferent. The South and middle West are waiting to see what the people of Louisiana propose to do in this matter. Sentiment throughout these States is practically unanimous in our favor, and to whom the sug gestion that there is opposition any where in Louisiana and to the in significant tax proposed is incon ceivable. All through the Mississippi Val ley and across to the Atlantic the people want the Exposition to be held in New Orleans because, they my, it will benefit their respective sections. That it will turn the eyes of the world to the great valley of the Mississippi and stimulate every interest, there can be no sort of doubt. That it will do more for I isiiana than for any other State is equally undeniable. As has been pointed out, the tax is so insignificent that it is impos sible for it to furnish an honest basis for opposition to amendments number One andl Two on the of ficial ballot. When a dozen eggs will pay the tax (on a thousand dol lar assessment it is puerile to speak of it as a burden even to the poor est farmer. In the preparation of this Expo sition, nations, states, corporati(ons and individuals outside of louisiana will put in five dollars for every one we spend on it, and the attractions presented will bring many millions of people to Louisiana who other wise would never come to the State. These have to be sheltered and fed, and the farmer is the man who pro duces the material with which to feed them. Decision day is near at hand, and it is imperative to emplhasize the fact that a votu against the two op position amendmenits is tan:tamountI to a vote in favor of loca:ting the exposition at San Frant is·co. District Court, with the (;ra:wl Jury empanelled for this termn, cin vened in St. Joseph on Mnlay The list of members comn)psing th( Grand Jury and the report of thi: body are published elsewhere. Thi Judge's charge to the Grand Jur3 was indeed most forcible and dwell principally on concealed weapons concubinage, violation of the gamt laws and a few other matters of pub lie miisance. The first two subject= were handled by the Court withoul gloves, and the Jury was specially charged to return indictments where evidence justified. On the whole the ebarge of the Court was abhle, clear and forcible and made deep impres abn on not only the Jury but the eatire Court. Mr. Howard Clark, Jr.. returned bthis morninig from South Louisiana where he went for the negro J.ames Orant, wanted here on cha:rge ,f ehooting with intent to coulnit mnur dr, having shot one Mose Harper, Jr., rsome time hack. After the shoot nlag Grant escaped arrest by leaving the parish, but got into trouble again and was sent up from .More howe parish for burglary and got four years in the pen. Mr. Clark elsted him in Capt. Hood's camp. . Anp ls. He stands good Proceedings of Fifth Louisia3ia Levee Board. I)E:ITA. LA.. Oct. 12. 191'(.
