FORD. We have at hand bulletin No. 2 of the National Fertiliser Assoei Ation, of Philadelphia, which in effect is propogands agaiast Henry Ford's proposition to take over the Muscle Shoals plant for the manufacture of fertilizer. If, as alleged by the bul letin, the operation of the plant would be of such mall Importance I in the fertilizer industry, why this expensive caspaign of propoganda against Mr. Ford's proposition? Is it possible that the fertilizer trust has become a disinterested advo cate of government economy and is spending its money to save Uncle Sam's strong box from depletion? Hardly possible. Kirby, Adams County Agent, in Natchez Democrat) The insect is not a native of the United States but appears to have come here from Cai:it where it oc curs commonly on food plants. It was introduced into San Jose (pro nounced San Hosey) Valley Califor nia, about 1870 and the name of the locality where it was first found has been given it. It ii found on the fol lowing fruit trees in abundance: Peaches, pears, apples and -plums and the privit hedge is also a host for it. San Jose Scale is a minute, incon spicuous insect which does not, to the untrained observer, appear to be a living creature. The body of the liv ing insect is Eoncealed beneath the circular, waxe, scale which it forms for its proteetlon. The largest scales are smaller than an ordinary pin head in diameter and are quite flat. Be neath the scale the body of the insect may be found as a small, immovable yellow body which, if crushed, seems to be filled with a thin, yellow, oily li quid. The young of this specie are born alive and their powers, of repro duction are so remarkable that a tree containing only a few scales in the spring will be heavily infested by fall. The injury is in two forms. The insect draws sap from the tree, which is not as injurious as causing a thick ening of the cell walls and the result is starvation to -the tips of the branches. The scale produces a de structive red stain around the point of attack, either on the infested fruit or on the bark of the tree. The best known method of combat ting this insect is to spray during the winter months with Lime-Sulphur so i lution one gallon to eight gallons of water. However, this solution can on , ly be applied during the winter or hosmant period of the tree for it is liable to injure the tree if the leave Sare green. 1 it Tanlac is manufactured in one of * the, largest and nest modernly is equipped laboratories in the country. a -W.
