The Ga zette's Fort Smith special sa)i: Yesterday morning, between Childcr's station and Web ber's Falls, Indian Nation, while Deputy United States Marshals Beck and Merrill were attempting to ancst John Bark and a Cherokee nsmed John M. Jacks, whisky ped dlers, both officers were killed and their heads smashed in with revolvers. Dark escaped. Beck was an old member of ihe force. Merrill was only 22 years old, and was from Jackson, Tennessee. Fort Wayni, September 28.! he express car of the Pacific Express company on the Elk river branch oi the Wabasli.St. Louis and Pacific railroad, bound west, when near Peru, Indiana, was broken into by three masked men. Express Messenger Loomis was bound and gagged, and the safe was robbed of $15, 000 and all the olher valuables In the car. The robbers escaped after locking Loomis in the car, whence he was released on the ar rival of the train at 1'rru. There Is no clue to the robbers. Huntinoton, Pa , September 28. The Huntington car and car wheel works, Blaln Brothers, proprietors, failed with a judgment entered last evening by the Union bank for $50,000. The olher claims will Increase the liabilities to $200,000, asietts assigned are $100,000. There are 400 employees who have not been paid for two months. Efforts will be made to tide over the embarrassments so that work can be resumed on Monday. A large number of orders are held by merchants, who, with the entire community, will feel the effects of the failure. Wasincton, September 28. Senator Bayard was shown this morning a telegraphed extract from the Chicago Herald of to-day. While declining to take notice of the Herald's reiteration of the truthfulness of Its Interview, he furnishes the following in writing : "Had you show me the correspondence of the Chi cago Herald before you published it, purport ing to give an Interview with me, I would nave shown you how utterly groundless and untrue it was. Nothing was ever said by me that could possibly be construed into an approval or toleration of General Butler's political ac tions, nor willingness to sre Ihe public power entrusted to his hands." Niw York, September 28. Captain Davis, from South San Domingo, speaking ot the terrible cyclone there, says that at least 100 sailors must have perished within a distance of 80 miles south of San Domingo City. It will take years of labor and an Immense amount of money to repair the damage caused by the storm. Great destitution among the poorer classes must surely follow, as nearly all the plantain trees, on Ihe fruit of which they depend In a great measure for food, are blown down. One-half of all villages along the coast are destroyed. Among Ihe build ings destroyed at Ozna were the factories ot Captain Hardy, of Boston, who sustained losses to the amount of $30,000.
