THOMAS II. JOHNSON, Iluslness Manager. i'himav, o(rroiii:it in, ihhj. Till remit of the election in Ohio will, no doubt, be the means of defeatinc Mr. Kan dall's chancel for the Speakership. Till Houston Age sagely observes thai "for Interesting reports of local matlers the big morning papers are often eicelleil by the small afternoon papers." A lecturer at Fori Worth, on the subject of leprosy, asserted that wherever that dis ease has appeared n this country the Chi men have been the medium. A real old time "norther" would be the means of giving business a boom, and the weather prophet that can get up a streak of such weather in the next few days will be duly honored. It is quite evident that it will take special legislation on the subject to settle the fence cutting difficulties, and those men who have fenced up land not their own should b severely dealt with under the laws of trespai Kefresentative John Hancock is men tioned as an available candidate for the Speakership In the event of a break-up among the other candidates, nets a good man an possesses the qualifications for the position. Till Urenham Banner says: "Whenever the newspaper press sits down on a publi man, he begins to squirm and to declare the press a humbug ; as long as the press up holds him he is the warmest friend, and most ardent admirer." A RKi'ORTER of the Henderson News inter viewed Hon. J. II. Jones, representative from the Third Texas district, the other day, and among other things that gentleman gave it as his opinion that McDonald, of Indiana was the most available Democratic candidate for the Presidency. At the Itrighlon beach races, last week. three colls, the get of the famous Texas racing stallion Rebel, made a very creditable score. They were .'erg. Kyle, Joe Murray and I.tos. The two first won races, whili Eros got a place in a very hotly contested race. The account of the knightly tournament held at Ilrazoria, on Thursday last, as pub. lished in the Independent was more than in teresting, and that paper is entitled to much credit for its enterprise in that respect. The oration of Hon. Asa E. Slratton on that oc casion was a masterpiece and no doubt added not a little to the enjoyment of the tourna ment. There is food for thought in the fact that while Foraker was flying the eagle in wide awake speeches during the late campaign in Ohio that Mr. Iloadly was preserving an eloquent silence in Philadelphia, and really made less than a dozen speeches during the campaign. An agonising fear seizes us that If Foraker had kept silent the result might have been different. Tut Athens Marrow Gauge says: "Al ready the excellence of the operation of the constitutional amendments is being shown. So far $425,000 worth ol county bonds have been purchased by the State Hoard of Educa tion for the investment of school funds, at an average interest rate of six per cent. The laving to the school fund by this investment is $170,000, which li so much gain to the State, over the Slate bonds investment." Ir IS to be hoped that Joe Mulhattan has not wandered into the McGregor Platndealer office. That paper gives a long account of the finding of the petrified bodies of a white man and an Indian, in close proximity to each other, at a point between Bastrop and GIddingi, and the white man was Identified by an old time sweetheart. They were iup. posed to have rested In that spM since 1849, and while it is a new departure In the tenia- tlon line, yet one can't help asking the I lain- lealer, "whatyer givin' us?" The resolution of Alderman Holton, direct- nrr the Ditch Commissioner to make an ln spectlon of the ditches and report to the Mayor all persons who defile Ihem in viola tion of the city ordinance, and lhat he make affidavit before the Recorder against all per- sons who In any manner commit luch nuis ance, is a move in the right direction, and ery effectually settles Mr. Lockwood'i reso lution asking that the ditches be made sewers. Holton Is wise in his generation, and the Ditch Commissioner will do his duty in pursuance to the resolution, the ditches will be of great benefit and convenience to the people of the west side. Mr. K. A. Hurkr, Director General 11I the World's Industrial and Cotton Centennial position to be held a New Orleans in SS-i s. has addressed an eloquent letter to the oveinors of the various blates ol Hie sown in the interest of the exposition, The consti tution ol the State of Texas Is particularly moisbacky on the subject of State aid towards such objects, and if Mr. Ilurkecan succeed in placinc this matter, through his letter lo the Governor, in a light that will Induce the Legis lature lo make an appropriation lhat will properly and decently enable Texas to be represented on that occasion, he will earn Hie everlasting gratitude of every public spirited citizen of the State. The census statistician asserts that within 50 years the United States will have a popu lation of not less than 150,000,000. The tide f immigration, he says, will grow larger and stronger year by year, and that together with the natural increase In population will give us 50,000,000 people In 50 years from the pres ent date. With increased population will come larger patriotism, a deeper and better Intelligence, and a more general diffusion ol the wealth of the people. It will always be possible for men to accumulate coloisal for tunes in America, and It is right they should have the right to build up estates, but the masses will grow rich too. Those of us who live 50 years will see Ihe grandest nation the sun ever shone upon. The nations of the old world will be pitifully Insignificant by comparison. A meeting was held a few days ago in Madrid to consider the best way of celebrat ing the anniversary ol the discovery of Amer ica. The debate wai very lively, the proprie tor ol La Epoca explaining a plan which he had formed, laudable in theory, but difficult to act on. He proposes to Invite to the fes tivity all the editors of the Madrid papers, the headi of parties, the ex-Minlsters of Colony and Navy, and those who have rep resented Spain in America, the Chief ex-Captains General of Cuba and l'uerto Kico, the Chief Bishop of the Indies, and all those who represent in a consular and diplomatic ca pacity those beautiful countries which, to gether with Spain, contain 70,000,000 of Spaniards, the deputies and Senators of the Antilles, the American Congress, and all noble descendants of the viceroys. The Uvalde Hesperian in discussing the eitorlionate charges for freight made by the Sunset road, on all points west, makes a most excellent suggestion in the following: "II the shippers of produce and merchandise in the towns along the route from San Antonio to Del Klo, would combine in their own inter est and remonstrate against this monstrous discrimination In freights, which is 10 unjust to all classes consumers as well as dealers we have little doubt of the accomplishment of their aim; and in this very state of affairs lies one of the strongest arguments In favor of lib eral lubicriptions to a rival line. Could the Nueces Valley railroad become a fixed fact it would work a complete revolution In the present unequal tariff of freights, for then the Sunset would cease to be a monopoly to far as our people are concerned, and Uvalde, by means of wagons and teams, do a large re ceiving and shipping business. Let our peo' pie ponder these matters." The Chicago Times sayi: "An Ohio 'Democrat' sayi that Mr. Carlisle 'made a mistake by not helping his party' bush whackers in Ohio. Mr. Randall did not make that mistake ; he went to Ohio, ' took off his coat, and worked like a Trojan for the party. Carlisle did not make a single speech, and I tell you,' added the virtuous Democrat, ' the party won't forget either.' The impor tance of the Speakership is in the fact that the Speaker ol the House has come to be the real leader of the policy of the party which controls the House, so far, at least, as It has any policy. It appears from the view of that virtuous Ohio Dem:crat that the party of that trade mark Is more concerned in the election of a Governor of Ohio than In the possession or leadership of a policy in the National Legis lature. Carlisle is a Free Trader; Randall a rampant Pennsylvania Protectionist. But what is free trade or protection to statesmen who dub themselves Democrats by comparison to getting control of the provincial government machine in Ohio for the use they maybe able to make of it in electing a purveyor of the spoils next yearl For that which can give them even the smallest grain of encouragement in playing a game for the plunder of office, they are quite willing, it appears, to prefer a Protectionist to a Free Trader for their politl cal leader. The virtuous Ohio Democrat, who Is a Congressman, it appears, avowed his intention to support Cox'a candidacy for Speaker, That means, however, that he wishes the election of Randall. Mr. Cox's candidacy may be well intended, but it is idle for any man to affect to believe he can be chosen. The real contest Is between Carlisle and Randall. If Carlisle Is not chosen, Ran' dill probably will be. And the earnest, zeal ous, honest and altogether wonderful affection among Democratic statesmen for the enfran chlsement ol commerce warrants the opinion of the Ohio Democrat that they will not choose the man who neglected to ' take off his coat ' for Mr. Itoadley."
