Among the recent arrivals from Missouri was Mr. R. Robinson and wife. They have come to make their home in Adams county. Mrs. Robin son is a niece of Jesse M. Turner. Captain Hass, of the Salvation army in company with an adjutant and two ensigns, came down from Spokane last Friday. They held several meet ings here, and departed Monday morn ing for Oakesdale. Attorney O. R. Holcomb returned Sunday evening from Omaha, Neb., where he went to attend the Exposi tion. Mr. Holcomb says that there seems to be some trouble in getting satisfactory rates on the railroads. John Bovee, the proprietor of the Model meat market, informs us that lie intends to continue in the butcher business right along, and has no in tention of closing as soon as harvest is over. Report* to the contrary not withstanding. Dr. T. DewittTalmage, the celebrat ed Brooklyn divine, will deliver an address in the Tabernacle tent, capable of seating 3,000 persons, at the corner of Sprague and Mill streets, Spokane, on Thursday, August 26, for the benefit of the Washington volunteers.—Che ney Sentinel. For each 100 pounds of freight or for one passenger 91.00 will be oharged each way.—A. W. and E. E. Bhaw, Proprietors. Col. D. J. Zent left on Monday eve ning for Colville where he expects to locate. Mr. Zent told the News man that he would go into a general mer chandise business in Colville. The family will remain here for the pres ent. The Colonel,as he is familiarly called by his friends here, said that be had nothing but the best wishes for Ritzville and its people, but that there was certain conditions of climate and water that suited him better in Col ville than in Ritzville. Mr. Zent has been in Ritzville nearly three years during which time he has held several responsible positions of trust and honor. He has successfully carried on his private business and has made money and friends, and while Ritzville people are sorry to lose the society of so valuable a citizen they certainly wish him well wherever he goes. The News joins heartily with the rest of his friends in wish ing him success. Quite a serious accident occurred at Lind on Monday night in which one man was killed outright and another probably fatally injured. They were engaged in unloading coal into the bunkers there, and in some way the brakes failed to work and a car was thrown to the ground some thirty feet. The regular heaver, an Italian by the name of Joe Sirinnie was buried under the car and killed. The brakeman, Albert Nesbet, jumped and received injuries to his spine from which he can hardly recover. The accident occured about 10 p. m. Mon day night. Prosecuting Attorney Staser went to Lind Tuesday morning and held an inquest. The vordict was to the effect that death was caus ed from being crushed beneath a car of coal and that the trestle was at the time in an unsafe condition, The de ceased was taken by relatives to Port land for buriai. Nesbet the breakman was taken at once Spokane for treat ment but with slight hope for recovery. A very interesting and entertaining address was delivered by Rev. Newman before the Adams County Temperance Society last Friday evening. It is a pity it could not have been heard by every man, woman and child in Ritz vilie especially those men who through cowardly fear of the supposed power of the saloon have from time to time been induced to sign saloon licenses. D. J. Zent of Ritzville was in town the first of the week looking for a business location in the grocery line. He left for his home Thursday. Mr. Zent spoke favorably of this place and may return in a few weeks.—States man-Index, Colville, Wash. The man killed last week on the track east of here proved to be Thos. McMann. He had been here about a year and was addicted to the use of liquor, which was no doubt the cause of his death. The many friends of Benj. Martin, who have anxiously awaited his re turn to health and strength, are de lighted to see him riding about in his buggy once more. France Naid, who purchased a sec tion of land in the Dr. Cottingham township without seeing it, says he is well pleased with his purchase after seeing it. I Persons living in the neighborhood of Griflith's corners desiring threshing done in a speedy and workmanlike manner should not fail to see S. A. Osborne. Several farmers were in town look ing for harvest help the past week. They say the hobo is not proving sat isfactory as a rule in the harvest field. Benj. Martin went to Spokane this morning. Mr. Martin expects to be away about ten days. He goes to to take a course of Turkish baths. J. C. Sullivan of Fletcher came to town Monday after Dr. Adams to go to W. C. Reeder's to see their daughter Lela who was sick. For the next twenty days we offer tin ennnmeled ware, coffee mills, lanterns, oil cans, etc., at cost at the Blue Front. C. E. Shipman and family returned home last evening from LaGrande,Ore. where they have been visiting the past few weeks. DELIGHT, WASH. From our regular Correspondent. Mat Burkhart started his thresher the 19th. Mrs. L. L. Sutton has been danger ourly ill, but at last accounts was somewhat better. The plaintive sound of the header has given way to the hum of the thresher at last. I. Watson and crew are at a stand still on E. T. Bower's ranch waiting for repairs for his thresher. Mr. Billings, who has been under the doctor's care at R. Coleman's, has gone back to his family in California. The Methodist's will have no more preaching until after conference. The Sunday school has also teen suspend ed until after harvest. There has been quite a lot of sick ness here on account of hot weather but since it has turned cool the sick list has decreased ih number. The weather here has been on the rampage for the past week or two and without form or ceremony ran right up above the 100 mark almost daily. LIND, WASH. From our regular Correspondent Mr. Mover's new store is nearing completion. Sam Armstrong has been quite sick but is reported better. W. C. Campbell and lamily expect to move to tjwn soon. Mr. Johnston and family of Scott was in our city last Monday. Don't forget the dance neit Friday the 26th in Meyer's new store building Mr. and Mrs. J. M. Moulton spent Sunday with Mr. and Mrs. J. H. Rich ardson. Messrs. Frank Johnson and E. M. Bovee of Ritiville were in this vicinity last week. The click of the hammer is heard from morning till night at Neils un's new warehouse. Lind is strictly on the boom. Will soon have four stores, four warehouses, two blacksmith shops, a livery stable, new school house, new church, and many more improvements.
