Is a New Gulf COity to be Built ut n Mr. Gould, according to the t New York special of the News, is : about to purchase the road from C Vermilionville, Louisiana, to theI Sabine river, in order to control 1 all the outlets from Texas. Thise Vermnilionville road was chartered under the Warmoth regime in 1 Louisiana, with a branch running up the Red river valley and anoth er-to Texas. Bends of the State to a considerable amount werei squandered and stolen in further- I ence of the scheme. Its franchises, at one time esteemed valuable, had fallen into insignificance, but it is to be presumed that the pres ent railroad furore has brought them once more into recognition. The News understands the dis patch to mean that Mr. Gould will purchase the road referred to in order to guard against competi tion with the New Orleans Pacific road. This inference is the only idea at present that can be reason ably deduced from the dispatch. It may, to some extent, affect the operations of the Texas and New Orleans railroad. - Galveston .Nyews. The sbove, taken in connection with the fact that Eastern influ ence secured a larger appropria tion for the deepening of the chan nel at the mouth of the Sabine than the United States Engineer's estimates called for, may be signi ficant. Fortunately there is enough trade for all the Gait ports, no matter how greatly their capaci ties may he developed. There is but one way for any man in business to be thoroughly independent in its conduct, and that is to have plenty of cash to pay as he goes. It makes no diif ference then where he trades.
