The School Board met this day in regular session, members prese cut : A. D. Martin, President, M. C. Broussard. John Morgan and J. N. Williams. Absent: J. H. Putnam, J. Nugier and Nathan Perry. The minutes of last meeting were read and on motion the same were adopted. On motion the sum of $125 or so much thereof as may be nesces sary was appropriated out of the funds of the fou th ward for the purpose of purthasing tnat'rial to build a school horse in the fourth ward. provided a snitabte site of one acre he donated as a building lot for said house. Mr. Clarance J. Edwards is hereby authorized to receive and disburse the same. Resolved that the following named persons are hereby reques ted to act as visiting trustees- for the aforesaid school : Theogene Touchet, Ursin Frederick and John Conner. On motion, Messrs. Lastie Bour que, Severien Primemux. and F. D. Lelhe, were appointed as true tees for the school located in first ward near G. Dntolautis. On motion a school was locate 1 in the lower portitn of the fifth ward and Messrs. ,Levi Sarver. T. J. Iloffpauir and Syphroien Simon, were appointed as trustees for the same. Smedes, Mayor, Lastie Bronssard. Solomton Nise, J. J. Abadie and 0. Buirque. The minutes of the two meetings of the Council of the date of April 8th 1882, were read and adopted. The Mayor stated that as he would be absent from the town for a while, he had called this meet ing of the Council in order that a Mayor pro tem he elected. The newly elected membtrs of the Town Council assembled this day ut the Court House as requir" ed by law, and having produced their credentials, and having been duiy sworn to the oath of office, proceeded to organize as follows: R. C. 8inedes took the chair and called the board to order; the following members being pres ent, Lastie Broursard and Ophe lias Bourque. The Secretary, W. B. White presented the returns of the vote for Mayor and Aldermen and on the levying of a special tax at the ariial election held on Monday the 3rd day of April 1882 ; ac tion on the same was deferred an til the next meeting. On motion the Council adjourn ed to meet on Friday the 14th nat. R. C. SM3EDES, Mayor. W. B. WHITE, Secty. Police Jury The Police Jury t1det this day at the Court House pursuant to adjournment. Present :-Howard Hoffpanir, president, and the following nam ed members, viz :-Messrs. Brous sard, Nunez, Primenux, Thibeaux Trahan and Vanslyke. The minutes of the last meeting were read and adopted. Art. 1st resolved, that the par ish tax for the-year 1882, be and the same is herby levied and as sessed at the rate of Thirteen and one-half mil4s on the dollar of the value of the taxable property of this parish, real and personal, ac cording to the budget already pub lished in pursuance to law. On motion of Mr. Hoffpauir, Art. 21resolved, that the pro visions of the ordinance jn rela tion to the running at large of hogs in this. parish, adopted April 3d 1882. shall have no eff ct in the 6th Police Jury ward of this parish. The sum of $15.00 was allow ed to Gilbert Wright payable out of the surplus paupers and in digent of 1881, to be paid to the order of A. Vanslyke. On motion of Mr. Vanslyke, the sum of $100.00 was allowed to be paid out of the surplus funds of 1881, to the order of Solomon Wise, Treasurer of the "A hheville Fire Company No 1 of Abbe ville," for their benefit. Messrs. Martin V. Lampman, Ethan D. Allen and J. W. Dooley on the jury of freeholders in the place of Messrs. Ed. Vanslyke, Marion Eldridge and Alphonse Leblano to trace and lay off a public road in Rice's Cove. Art. 3d resolved, that Marcus L. Morton, Road Overseer for the 7th road district, be notified to have the neces ary '-epairs made on the Coulpe Kinney bridge with out delay. On motion of Mr. Nunes, the following preamble and resolution were unanimously adopted, and dpies thereof ordered to be for warded to Hons. A. Nunez, Sena tor and Wm. Shepherd member of the House of Representatives of the General Assembly of this State : Whereas, the raising of sheep has become a difficult and almost fruitless industry of late years in our parish owing to the destrue tion by dogs, which are allowed to roam at large in this parish, therefore: Be it resolved that the Lewis'a. tore be and it is hereby respect fully requested to pass an act to remedy the evil complained of with a view to the protection of sheep. Art. 4th resolved, that the con tract to build the fence around the Court House sPqare be let to G. B. Shaw and to be built at follows : The posts to be 4x4 six feet long and to be let in the ground two feet : pannels to be 8 Met l6ong, five planks to the pan nel, same style of fencing as around said Shaw's lot. All to be of No. I cypress lumber; also four pairs of steps to be three feet high six feet wide, lj inch lumber best quality of cypress. Also, to boilt a picket fence around the jail. to be five feet high, posts to be same* aite as the Court House fence, and a gate to open in front of the jail. The picket fence on the north and east side of the jail is to joln the fens sirrounding the Court, Ihe stre-* ban t : su' ' to bo loft around the whole square. The fence around the jail to be built 15 feet from the walls on the north and south sides and 16 feet from the walls on the east and west sides, the whole work or job to he done in a workman like man ~er and to be received and accept ed by a committee to be appointed by the Police Jury for that pur pose. The Police Jury will make an appropriation of a sufficient sum out of the common surplus funds of 1881 to pay for said fencing when completed and accepted. I hereby agree to superintend the buildrbg of the fence around the Court House square and the picket fence around the jail, and to see that said fence is built as specified in the resolution passed by the Police Jury in regard to same free of charge; and to have all the work done as cheap as possible, buying all lumber and material and furnishing the same at cost to the parish.
