Saturday, Sept. 11, 1886. The sweet potato crop of this parish promises to be a good one. We saw a married man the other day on the opposite side of the bayou who did not know what a bodkin was. DMr. J. Henry Putnam has been made foreman of the grand jury, and the citizens of the parish may look for thorough work. We were favored with a light shower of rain last Thursday after. noon. Present indications would lead as to the conclusion that we will soon have more. SThe tirst bale of cotton raised in this psrssh, this year, was by Mr. F. p. Lein and sold to- Mr. Jacob usces, who shipped it to Wise & Beer, New Orleans. Some of the cooks, and other un occupied servants about town are quitting for the cotton picking sea son. Good thing for the cotton growers, but a little heavy on some of the town people. Some of our young m.n are in an earnest spirit about organizing a brass band. They contemplate soon to give an entertainment for its benefit, and it is to be hoped our citizens will be liberal in answering to the call. Personal Mention. Mr.' Bourges, of Lafayette, paid Abbeville a visit a few days ago. Master Solomon Isaacs left here a few days ago .for North Louisiana to attenil school there. We learn that a quantity of fod der and hay was made this summer. it, this parish, and hay cutting js still going on with some. The crop will be an exceedingly large one if we are correctly informed. The farmers are feeling the effect of the dry spell, especially on the cotton crop, which, in many places, is beginning to dry up and shed the forms; and, indeed, a real good shower would not come amiss. Rev. M. Manly, the pastor of the AM. E. Church, South. at Abbeville, assisted b3 ministers from abroad, is conducting a protracted meeting here which he expects to continue for the next ten or fifteen days. There is already much interest man ifested. On last Saturday night one of our citizens, living near the bayou, heard the dishes rattling ont the sup per table, and striking a light he looked and found a good-sized opos sum helping himself to the scraps left from supper. lir. Opossum was soon dispatched and the next day graced the table in a quite different capacity from what he had intended. Our friend says he will be glad to see the experiment repeated. Town Council.
