DR ! PARKES, 340 N, hetry, Nashville, Tenn Comatr~y Road.a The problem of how to procnre good roads has engrossed the atten, tion of the lawmaking powers ever since this country has been seatledl and as the country gets older and the necessity for roads becomes greater the problem grows more and more complicated, Various expe* dients have been tried, more or less successful, principally less and to day in most parts of the country the public roads are nightmares, dust in the dry weather, impassable bogs in wet. The introduction of the bycicle as done much to improve the roads in the North and East, but the use of the machines is not so extensive in the South, and consequently the roads have not received the atten-, tion they have in the sections refer. red to above. But even if we have not the same use for the roads for purposetrof pleasure, we need them as much, if not more, for business, We have not as many lines of rail road as there are in the more thickly settled localities, and consequently our products have to be hauled a longer distance to redch these pablio carriers, The sugar and cottoan growers know what bad roads mean at the time they market their crops. Lately there has been an effort in Louisiana in the direction of better roads. In many parts of the State they still cling to the old style of turning out the "hands" who are assigned to duty on a certain road and wocking (?)it by this means. If anybody ever saw a road properly worked by such means we never' heard of him. Such a summons gen erally means a day's picnic and frolic, with, maybe, a few fights thrown in, and the road is no better off ihat;it w.baati.reks w "sarerkm ed." This style of taking care 4 the public highways, is about p.l par with keeping up the militia by means of the old-fashioned muster' once a year of all the men of militia age in the county. Some of the parishes in tattisians are becoming dissatisfied with this time-honored- method of not keeping the roads in repair and are teryio new ones, among them the parish of St, Mary. That parish has recently, through its policy jury, come to the very sensible conclusion that r working, like all other speciewi'a public work, can best be done by - contract. It has accordingly made a contract for the working of the public roads of that parish and-keep ing them in good order for a term of years for a certain sam. This seems to as to be the best wad' ia which to attend to the highways pro' perly, and we venture the prediction that soon St. Mary parish will have the best roads in the State. We think her example could well be fol lowed by other parishes and the roads all over the State put in a proper condition.--New Delta. Mr. Baily, an Angora goat raiser of California, has been in Washimng ton trying to stir up the departments to dor somethi*E xa ti 6betisingi from the Turkish Government 'pe' mi.sion to export from its territoriea a few hundred Angora goats `oti breeding purposes. Mr. Bally owanf 10,000 Angora aoats, 1000 of them pare-blooded, all of which have been bred from an original importation of four, but be says there is great need of some fresh blood in the stck. It appears, from the statistics gathered in view of the effort to set up a gov, ernment goat farm, that the Angort goat industry now exists in thirty States and all the territories. Sir hundred thousand pounds of hair at year are raised here, supplying fine plushee for the Pullman Car CoQlk pany and other large consumsers yet the industry is still in its infancy, ant we import ten pounds of mohair lol every pound we produce. The suitabilltv of this important industry to our coast climate is not yet wide ly eunouh recognized.' Many of the applicants for divorce acknowledge that they have made a sour iasb,
