Melebeck's dog showing some signs of being rabid last Sun day his owner promptly killed him. Geo. W. Caldwell has put down a splendid brick foundation in the courthouse yard for the new cistern. Mille Becker an insane man who has been incarcerated in the parish jail for about two months past await ing interdiction proceedings was examined yesterday before his Loaor Judge A. C. Allen. The expropriation suit against Mrs. Mary A. Stebbins was tried by a jury Wednesday evening and by agreement the jury awarded the defendant the sum of $136 for the land and $64 for damages. The thanks of the editor and staff of this paper are due Messrs. M. Fischer, R. Orimshaw and B. Isaacs, committee of Fire Co. No. 1, for an invitation to the ball giveny them at the French Hall on Monday night, July 4th. To-day at two o'clock p. m., the closing exercibes of the present ses sion of Mount Carmel Convent will be held at that institution. Our thanks are due the talented superior en Mother Aimee do Jesus for an invitation to if present upon this pleasant occasion and we shall cer tainly endeavor be on hand. After an absence of two weeks the Barmore made her appearance here late Tuesday. David Todd, a New Iberia attor ney was in town this week on pro. fessional business. H. H. Bartells of Hope Mill was in town this week doing duty as a juror in the railroad cases. Dr. N. D. Young, Simenet Le Blanc and Joe Rageur of Royville were in town last Saturday. Its Peculiaritles. Morse of the Southern Pacific was in town sever al days this week attending the rail road expropriation suits. Dr. W. G. From all reports the corn has been badly damaged in a number of places throughout the parish by the high winds of Monday and the fol lowing days. Messrs Eli Wise and Gus God chaux made a flying trip to New Orleans last Friday on business con nected with the railroad extension to this place. E. B. Cashing, chief engineer of the Southern Pacific Railroad Com pany arrived in town Sunday even ing and will attend the trial of the, expropriation suits. Miss Lydia Theriot of Royville who has been spending a while here with her aunt Mrs. F. F. Young and her sister Mrs. A. J. Godard, returned home Sunday. Capt. John Sanders of the steamer E. H. Barmore was an attentive spectator of the court proceedings on Wednesday during the trial of the expropriation suits. The widow Joseph Faulk, an old resident of the parish died Monday evening after a protracted illness. Ber remains were interred in ceme try at Queue Tortue on Tuesday. Rev. Father Thebault has been kept pretty constantly on the go since Father Mehault's departure, attending to sick calls and his pas toral duties. His parish covers a large extent of territory and it re quires an active energetic man like the Rev. Father to supply its spirit ual demands. Capt. J. P. Gueydan, of St. Bon net Ranch, after a brief sojourn with with his family at Bay St. Louis, Mis sissippi returned home this week by way of this place where he spent a few days. Steven Foreman of Queue Tortue was arrested Thursday on a charge of being dangerously insaine and was locked up in the parish jail. His examination occurred yesterday before Judge Allen. Judge 0. C. Mouton of Lafayette has been here this week attending court as counsel for Mrs Katie God. chaux in the expropriation proceed ings brought by the Iberia and Ver milion railroad company. The public town schools, under the charge of Prof A. J. Golden and Miss Rosa Winston held their an nual exhibition at the French Hall Wednesday night. A long an in teresting programme was gone through with, to the great delight of an enthusiastic audience. It is reported that during the rain storm last Monday evening a house at Perry's Bridge belonging to Jos. B. Mills was struck by lightning. Fortunately no one was in the build ing at the time as the result may have proved disastrous, all the crock. ery having been smashed up. On Wednesday the suit of the Iberia and Vermilion Railroad Co., v,. the heirs of Julia White Holo usan was tried before Judge Allen and a jury of freeholders, and upon due hearing of the evidence the jury returned a verdict for the plaintiff as prayed for, and fixing the dama ges and compensation for the land taken at $102. H. H. Bartells the energetic pro prietor of the Hope Mill plantation a short time since purchased from Mr. Wise his interest, in the place for the sum of sixteen thousand dol lars. He thus comes into possession of one of the finest estates in the parish, comprising as it does over 1600 acres of splendid laud, much of it heavily timbered, and the remain der the best arable sugar land in the State. Raphael Broussard'the intelligent young son of Minos C. Broussard has returned from Areadig, La., where he has been attending college during the past session. It is a source of great satisfaction to his friends as well as his parents to know that Raphael progress in his studies has been rapid and his promo tions were frequent. Vermilion boys are taking ranl in all the schools they attend. Last Sunday while making apro fessional call at the home of Alex andre Simon, a colored man resid ing in the first ward near Severin Leblanc's gin, Dr. W. D. White was bitten on the leg by a dog on entering the house. The wound tho' not very severe occasioned some pain, and as a wise precaution the Doctor has requested that the dog's life be spared in order that he may be absolutely positive that he was not rabid. Tuesday evening Judge Allen held court in chambers, for the pur pose of trying the railroad expropri ation suits. The usual preliminiaries having been accomplished the first case was called, that of the Iberia and Vermilion Railroad Co., vs the Heirs of Dupre Toups. The follow ing jury of fresholders was empanel led, Wm. Cade, foreman, John Ab shire, Jr., Dupre Meyers, J. M. Ileauxis, Nie Broussard, Eli Wise, Amb. Lacour, L. J. Feray, Eraste Mouton, F. D. Lege, C. D. O'Bryan, and Theolin Landry. Jr. The jury returned a verdict for $150 for de fendants, $77 for the land and $73 for damages. Take your best girl to the grand ball Monday night. Dr. W. G. Kibbe's wounded hand having taken on an erysipelations character he left for New Orleans last Friday to consult with Dr. A. B. Miles, pdl after seeing that emin nent physician returned home Mon day night. George Hayes one of the solid agriculturists of Indian Bayou was in town this week and made us a pleasant call. He reports an abun dance of water from recent rains and the success of the rice crops in his section he thinks is assured. Louis Laporte the other day pur chased the Defrance homestead on corner of Vermilion and Washington streets opposite the Mount Carmel Convent for $600. Ernest Brasseux who has been confined in the parish jail for several days npn a charge of shooting at Willie Ewing with intent to kill, has been released on bail bond of $150, to appear at the next term of district court to answer to the charge. The long looked for rain has come at last, but, unfortunately, is a good deal too copious for the good of the planters. The cane has made won derful progress since the rain has set in and if it were to stop now so the planters could lay by, a tremen dous crop would be assured. The corn crop is fair but, will lose con siderably if it continues wet a few days longer.-New Iberia Democrat.! The suit of the Iberia & Vermil ion Railroad Co., vs. Mrs. Katie Area and her husband Gus God chaux begun Thursday before Judge Allen. Judge Edwards, Lastie Broussard and T. D. Foster appear ed for the plaintiff while Judge Mouton and District Attorney Gordy represented the defendants. A number of exceptions and motions to quash the venire filed by the de fense were tried and decided'advrse ly to the defense. The jury was then duly empanneled and the case supposed to be ready to go to trial when the defense objected to the admission of any. testimony because the defendant's husband had not been cited. An inspection of the sheriff's returns and the citation served on Mrs. Godchaux showed that Mr. Godchaux had not been summoned, and this being a fatal de fect the case was dismissed as in non suit.
