PUIBLISHED EVERY SATURDAY. E. I. ADDISON, ........Publisher. Saturday, February 27, 1897. Governor Bushnell, of Ohio, no nounces that he will appoint Hanna nas senator to succeed John Sherman. This knocks out fire alarm Foraker. who thus has the leadership wrested from him. You can't have the gold standard unless you have the gold to furnish the standard. There two things about money-its quality and its quantity-and my friends, a man can writs about quality aud starve for the want of quantity.- W. J. Bryan at Dallas. There are two kinds of people who call the gold dollar an honest dollar. There is the man that doesn't know what he is talking about, but is honest in his convic tions, and there is the man that doesn't mean what be says.- W. J. Bryan. Despite McKinley and protection the promised prosperity and plenty are no where in siaht. The Pennsyl vania Steel Company of Harrisburg has given notice that after March 1st it will reduce the wages of its 3,000 employee 10 per cent. An expansion of the currency is what the country needs. The State of South Carolina will soon become the largest cotton planter as well as the largest liquor dealer, in the world. For ten years the penitentiary department has been gradually drifting into egriculture. Now it is annoauced by the directors in their annual report that the inter ests of that institution, with 820 hands, is centered in that oconpation. ....... . kn . . ......s al in Efrorce the Law, Gentlemen ! The disgraceful orgies last Satur day night at the Evangeline is a public scandal. It is a reproach to the officers of the law from the high est to the lowest, that such a state of affairs should so long be suffered to exist in a community, where mor ality has ever held a proud head and evil slipped around by stealth and in secrecy. t'iety is one thing, decency is another. It is not given to every man to be truly pious, we never pre tended to be, but it is possible and demanded for the most ordinary of mankind to be decent. Opelousas has long enjoyed the reputation of being a small Gomor rah, but her city fathers have at last awakened to a sense of their duty and responsibility, as the following shows : The movement inaugurated a little over a week ago by our women with the view of purifying the moral atmosphere of Opelousas has made marvelous headway-in fact it spread with the rapidity of a prairie fire, until to-day the membership will reach close on to two hundred determined women. Meetings are held every few days, and the attend ance is seldom below the hundred mark. At a meeting at Mrs. Hayes' Tuesday a committee of twelve la, died was appointed to call upon the city council, which was in session at the time, and urge npon that body the necessity of restricting brothels and their inmates. The council heeded the memorial and passed an ordinance (1) prohibiting brothels within the corporation, (2) prohibit. ing the inmates of brothels from fre quenting saloons in the town, and prescribing a penalty for the saloon keeper who admits them, (3) prohib iting 'busses or other vehicles from conveying passengers to and from brothels or houses of disrepute for immoral purposes, and prescribing a penalty for the livery stable keeper who is guilty of such an offense. St. Landry Clarion. !iroussard Roasts Beattie. Bob Brounsard, congressman elect from this district has filed his an swer to Old Beattie's contest, and the way he lambastes the old chronic office seeker is a caution. It i about time the old fraud recognized that be is a back ninmber and that he is "hoodooed" not to win. Listen to Bobs parting shots : "I notify you, that I shall demand of you, strict and specific proof of every charge you make ag-tinst the honesty and integrity of the people of this district. "For years you have been a can didate for office, before the peopieof this section of the State. In every instance you have gone among themn seeking their vote and their support; each time overcome and defeated, you have formulated charges, attack ing them both in their honesty and integrity; as much as you have ca joled them btefore the election, by that much have you maligned them after the election; no charge was base enough for you to abstain fromt making against them, and as years roll by, y6i again became cand date for office and again you sought theit support and vote, to meet again with defeat, again charges, libels, slan dems; is it a wonder then, that these people, whom you have so often charged with dishonesty, efused to elect you to office ? "In these contests, into which you enter regularly after each election,) you have succeeded in accomplish ing but one fact, and that is, your unwillingness to submit to the will of the majority. "You have kept the Represents tives of these people, in Congress,i busy defending them against viru lent and malicious attacks. when they could have been best looking afterj the interests of their constituency. Yog have in the past, greatly im paired their utility by your ever lasting contests. "'he last election in this district was notorionsly as honest as any in the United States; known to have been asuch all men who reside in the district, and known and acknowl edged by the press that supported you, and yet you complain of it, malign men who stand as high as you or your advisors in this commu nity, and pe.sist in carrying on this frivolous contest, to the utter detri ment of the interests of this district, to satisfy Sour greed for' office. "Your sueerinig allusions and base aspersions sgainst the individuals named in your notice of contest, is unworthy of notice. RI. F.
