Every seat Was .crowd.ed *and many were unable to gain entrance to the build ing. The church was beantifully deco rated, with evergreens and flowers. The altar was covered over with flowers. A floral arch was set, over the 'pulpit and overhead reaching ,from eide to side of the rostrum was . larige motto: "Of such are the Kingdon of Heaven." The day was one of children, flowers and song. The songs were pretty and the sweet voices of the children were grand proving that we have as pretty and as tilented children as can be found anywhere. The recitatiops .were appropriate and were delivered in a graceful manner. A paper was read by Ira V. Press ley in which he. discussed 'The Re lation of the Soul to the Body." The program as published in our last issue was faultlessly -rendered and all taking part did well. The day was a success and all present seemed to enjoy the exercises very much. The ladies who trained the chil dren deserve much praise for the success of the occasion-especially M.nes. 8. J.Davies and J. R. Legue nec who are gifted in that kind of work. Spring Fever.. Hixon preach ed a forceablo and scriptural sermon on the subject of Hell. Monday night Mr. Hixon again occupied the pulpit and presented the important subject of prayer. On Tuesday Rev. Mr. Hoover, of Alexandria, arrived and preached that -night. on unbelief. Wednesday nighti Mr. Hoover preaehed, on the subject of sst. Thursday evening Mr. Hoover preached a true and telling: serm6n from the theme: "All have sinned;" The congregations are large- and much interest is being manifested. The preaching is clear, practical and pointed and much good will surely result from the efforts being -put forth. The preachers are both earn est, devoted men and have the res pect and esteem of their congrega tions. Service is held each night at 8:15 o'clock and the meeting will ,continue two weeks or longer. LeBlanc, has been very sick, but thanks to a kind, Providence and good treatment is now much bet ter. Miss Laura Davies, who has been visiting her uncle and aunt, Ret. and Mrs. S. J. Davies, for several months departed for her home in Ramos, Mon day. W. H. Henry, Mmes. C. A. Schilling and Susie Morgan, and, Misses Lelia Pearl Henry, of Henry, attended the revival service in the Baptist' church of this place, Monday night. Erciest Montagne, of Abbeville, was a business visitor to Gueydan this week and during his short stay among us, he was the guest of his nephew, H. L. Gueyden.-Gueydan News. Jas. D. Ramsey and wife, left Mon day, for Warren, Ark., where Mr. Ramsey will take charge of the me chanical department of his father-in law's paper, The Democrat-News, the only. newspaper in that comity- and which has a good patronage and large circulation. Mrs. (Dr.) R. P. Nelson, of Abbe ville, was the guest of her sister, Mrs. (Dr.) E. W. K We had the visit this week of Harris A. Chauvin' formerly' of Abbeville. Mr. 'Chauvin comes here with:the intention of locating permanently; he is the special agent'cf the .Mutual Life Insu rance Company of New York, and will devote his time to the life insurance' business. The Messenger trusts that Mr. Chauvin' will make a success of his business here, and his location am.ongst us will be agreeable and profitable. St. Martinville Messenger. We are informed that Rev. Thebault-i will leave this week to spend three or four months in France for his health, and, will, at the same time have, his brother's remains, 'who died in New, Orleans a few months ago, disinterred there and will be reburied in the famii ly tomb in France. We sincerely hope, that when Father Thebault returns, he will bring back a robust health as a boon to remind him of the pleasant, memories of his country of nativity.- St. Martinville Review, Matrimony has finally captured bti old publisher and faithful emploviye Edward W. Another town has been added to Louisiana, a fine evidence of the growth and prosperity of the south western section says the New Orleans Picayune of the 7th inst.: The few place is being built On the hew line of the Southern Pacific Railroad, midway between Gu-eydan and Abbeville. It is located on high rolling ground and is splendidly situ ated for development into a city. "It is in a fine country, and a very healthy one. The town has been named Kaplan' by the Southern Pacific Railroad for A. Kaplan, of Crowley, in recogni tion of his enterprise in assisting -in building up soutwest Louisiana. Mr. Kapran is also largely interested with HI. Lichtenstein & Son, S. Gumbel & Co. and H. & B. Beer in a large number of rice mills, canals and other enterprises. The town of Kaplan is surdounded by one of the best farming countries of the south, the land being very rich and fertile.- Until recently the crops *have been cotton, corn and cane, bot since the system of artificial irrigation by means of canals has been estab lished large quantities of rice are being planted ''which. is especially good in that section' on' account. Of resembling the river rice in' character and on account of the quantity of the yield, which is from ten to twenty sacks an acre. The country about the town. is thickly settled, mostly by white farm ers, with small tracts of land, which they own and who are independent and in good circumstances, and the town itself is growing, and 'is likely to be one of the best in the state. Although the Southern Pacific only began the operation of its trains May 1, there are already in the course of construction four large brick build ings, which are being erected iby Carey & Co., of New Orleans, and contracts to be let for sever.l more. A large two-story hotel is about completed, and will be run in a first class manner, and there are two lumber-yards already established anti doing a fine business. Several large warehouses have been contracted for, and the- material is on the ground, and the buildings will be commenced soon. The town is laid out with wide streets. There has been a great demand for lots for building purpe ses, and a number of stores will sooa be doing business. A bank is'.to' be started, and a weekly newspaper has been established, called the Kaplan Times, of which. Mr. Andrew, of Crowley, is editor.; . 'O. H.
