GRAND OPEIHNG OF
SUNBURBAN BASE- f
BALL LEAGUE,
On last Sunday the Suburban Base
ball League opened in great form with
one of the largest parades ever wit- F
nessed on this side of the river. The
parade was led by Hon. Geo. Foster as F
grand marshal, followed by the six
baseball teams in fuill uniform.
Among the prominent men on this
side of the river who participated in a
the parade were Sheriff L. H. Marrero 1
of Jefferson parish, Deputy Sheriff L.
H. Marrero, Jr., of Jefferson parish;
Hon. M. S. Mahoney, who represented
Mayor Behrman; Hon. A. T. Wain
wright: Hon. Frank Henning, lion. R.
S. Stearnes, Hon. Jno. A. Barrett, and
several others.
After traversing the principal streets 1
of Algiers the parade boarded a car
and several trailers and proceeded to
the Suburban Park where the first
games of their season were played be
tween the Acmes of New Orleans and a
the Stones of McDonoghville.
The Stones were defeated by a score
of 9 to 5 due to the fact that although
the Stones have a very strong team I'
they were not in quite as good form as
necessary.
The second game was played be
tween the Lecourts of Algiers and the
Palmers of Carrollton, the Lecourts be
ing the victors by a score of 11 to 5. a
The league has for its officers: E. J.
L.-slie, president; Jos. Lala, vice-presi
dent; Jno. Negrotto, secretary; Jno. T.
Olsen, treasurer, and Geo. Hahn, chair- t
man of board of directors. The ofli
cial umpires are Jno. Clements and
Dan Tumey.
Every Sunday a double header will
be played in the Suburban Park.
On behalf of the Algiers Ry. & Ltg.
Co., and through the solic'tation of
Jno. T. Olsen, Major R. S. Stearnes
has offered the following to the Su
burban Baseball League:
1. A suitable loving cup to the
champion team.
2. A fine bat and cover for the high
est batting average.
3. A fine glove to the pitcher win
ning the largest number of games.
The offer has been accepted by the
league, who fully appreciate the good
will and encouragement with which it
has been offered.
Following is the official standing of
the league:
Played. Won. Lost. Pct.
Lecourts ........ 1 1 0 1.000
Acmes .......... 1 1 0 1.000
Stones .......... 1 0 1 .000

Need of Ideals.
Mankind always needs ideals whlch
0orm so large in the sight bf men that
they cannot fall to see them clearly.
More than ever is thus true of today,
for the turmoil and the hurry of mod
em life raise a great dust which of.
tentimes hides the skies. Enthusiasm,
dreams, hopes are to be encouraged.

reason is needed to cool and guide
them. The fact that we believe that
our ideal is beautiful and holy is not
ground for forcing it on our mates.
To win success a man mn st not be a
pure idealist, else in pra tlcal things
he will fall, lbut he must have ideals,
and he must obey them.- Atlantic.
