Sipkin this morning eI gettilg out of a new twin six," Loifis llirsky the real estatir said to Iuarnett Z'app the waist ilanul facturer. "'That feller goes from a pushcart to a ottomobeel in less than live years." "Less than two years, you me'in," Zalpp said. "What was the price ticket business before the war started, BIir sky? And since then he's been work Slag day and night manufacturing tags for Tag Day s. lie told me he cloutl of so4i twice as man:y tags if it wouldn't be that it's so hard to get red ink for putting red crosses on 'eml." "The war ain't been so had that way," Birsky said. "It's done a good deal to imake ,peo'ple give to charities." "War charities," Zapp corrected.. "C('harities oder war charities," Bir sky said. "What's the difference?" "There's a whole lot of differenee." Zapp reilied. "A business tlain which gives away his money to charity tmay oser care a nickel whether the t,,o1l victilns ever dry out or not, just so long ias the newspapers don't spell his namiie so Iadly that his customers cou'ldn't recognize it, y'understand. At the sare time, Birsky, he's got tllhe satisfaction of knowing that he ain't helping out the feller which caused the flood and who has got plenty of mnoney to assist the flood victims it it wouldn't be that he Is saving it to buy dynamite for blowing up more dams. Yes, Birsky, giving to some war re lief funds means relieving them gov ernmtents over In Europe from the ex pense of caring for their wounded sol diers and widows and orphans, so that they can use the money they ought to spend that way In buying ammunition to make more wounded soldiers and widows and orphans for the Americans to raise relief funds for." "Well, anyhow, a feller that gives money for war charity is just so kind hearted as a feller which gives money to charity," Birsky said. "That depends on his Intentions," Zapp replied. "There is some French er-Americans and German-Americans which has got a pretty good idee that war charity is a matter of bookkeep ing, and you couldn't call it kind hearted exactly if such a feller would inclose with his check a letter saying: 'Gents: Inclosed herewith please find check for five hundred dollars for wounded soldiers. Would be obliged if you will transfer the sum of five hundred dollars from your hospital account and credit same to your liquid fire and gas account and oblige yours truly.' " "In that case," BlRrky commented, "If such a feller thinks he's going to make a hit with the recording angel, y'understand, he might just so well save his five hundred dollars and get the same amount of credit by black jacking a couple of perfect strangers on a dark night." "Them fellers ain't looking to make a hit with the recording angel," Zapp continued. "They'll be perfectly sat Isfibd with a Double Cross of the Legion of Honor or a Red Eagle of the Second Class, a Blue Eagle of the -And Says 8he Would Never Stir From That 8pot If It Was a Pive Dollar Bill I Gave Her." Third Class or even Eagles in pastel shades If the Kaiser aln't got any other colors In stock. At the same time them fellers is just as kind heart ed as the lady who makes a big Geschrel about collecting subscrip tions for the Duchess de Camembert's hospital for wounded soldiers at Port de Salnt and writes every couple of days to the papers telling how she got a letter from the Duchess In which the Duchess says: 'Mrs. Maria Van Rensselaer-Zwlebel, My Dear Mrs. Van Rensselaer-Zwiebel,' and asked her to raise money for the hospital, Blrsky. Mrs. Zwlebel then goes on to say that any one desiring to give money to the Duchess de Camembert's hospital can send it to Maria Van Rensselaer-Zwlebel In care of J. C. 1 Morgan & Co., and remain truly yours Maria Van Hensselaer-Zwlebel. In this way she gets her name over four times and the Duchess de Camerm Witnesses: IHarry B. Caplan, Peter B. "Sure I know," Birsky said. "There's many a feller has sit through one of s these here benefit concerts thinking tof them poor wounded soldiers laying comfortably in hospitals somewhere, I in France and has said to himseau I after all what is it so terrible that a feller should lose a leg or an arm. I Am I right or wrong?" r "Listen, Birsky, you are talking now from concerts." Zapp said, "aber e the time when you really begin to I figure that maybe if you'd stayed in the old country you'd of been a whole lot better off even reckoning Zeppelins and liquid fire and everything. Birsky, is when you go once on a war benefit bazaar. What some kind hearted ladies will do in the way of making I change for the sake of them poor wounded soldiers would he consid ered already rough work by a Coney Island waiter." "Don't I know it?" Birsky said. "If der lieber Gott would of took my wife's sister a cousin by the name Mrs. (vornlk seriously, y'understand, they would of been obliged to call the police reserves, on account she stands in the middle hi Madison Square Gar den the day before the war bazaar closed and says she should never stir from that spot if it was a five dollar bill I gave her. So what .could I do? I took the cigars she sold me and change for a two dollar bill, and I I assure you, Zapp, I would as lleve have smoked the change. Some of them rough stogies which they sell by t tobacco and cigar booths in war bene- t fit bazaars acts like they were fuses manufactured for the Canadian Shell Committee and timed to light in thir ty, sixty and ninety days." "Them cigars was probably donated I by the makers," Zapp said. "If a feller donates merchandise to a war t relief bazaar, Birsky, he don't take it so particular that it's good, up-to-date I stuff. When I was on the donation I committee of the Fifth Grand Annual Fair of the I. O. 3M. A., Birsky, I thought I done wonders to get a hun dred decks of cards out of Lurie the stationery jobber. I even bought them I from the sporting goods booth myself s at five dollars for the lot, Birsky, and r every deck was perfect excepting for i a couple of missing high spades and I the joker. So you could take it from c me, Birsky, if some one donates a cigars to a Charity bazaar, if they c ain't exactly fireproof they're anyhow t of slow burning construction, and in a trying to smoke a boxful you could I take off a couple pounds In weight- u principally around the cheeks." t "Even so." Birsky said, "a feller t stands a better show to get his n money's worth by buying articles at I; bazaars as by taking chances on I things. I bet in my time I've took a chances at bazaars on everything from t oltermobiles down to pianos, and it's A my opinion, Zapp, that before the e oltermobile company allows the car to c be put on exhibition at the bazaar the a donation committee has got to execute m a surety company bond in twice the il amount of the list price of the car t that the winning number 31416 will j Future of Panama. Convalescence. The return from illness to health is like coming up from a dive. supposing the tinme from when the swimmer first sees light through the water until his head rises to the surface to be the affair of weeks. The change in phys ical condition may be slow, but the change in orientation takes place in a twinkling and is complete. The eye no longer looks down into unplumbed deeps, but back toward the light of day; curiosity for the ultinmate yields to a golden memory of familiar things -friends, household goods, books, hbarking dogs, the freshness of grass and trees. The body has reasserted Itself. The dreaming imagination is dragged away from Its goal by the galloping senses. Eye, ear, touch, taste start upon a rampage. 'Especially, does the appetite for food whix furious, discovering Itself endowed with power to transform a coddled egg into some thing rich and strange, and to Illumine chicken broth with a charm that no art can equal. The universe, lately shrunk to the sickroom, now rises again like the genie out of the bottle in which he had been imprisoned; the sickroom becomes a house of deten tion, and at its door, as In a seashell clapped to the ear, the convalescent hearkens to all the rumors of the outer world.-I-enry Dwight Sedgwick, in The Atlantic. Beating the Shifting Sands. Confronted by the task of building a highway over a desert of constantly shifting sands, which in a few years might cover and render useless a road bed of macadam or concrete, the Cali fornila highway commission has Intro duced a type of paving which is port able, so that it can he easily moved to conform to the changing topography of the country. Popular Mechanics Mafga zine descrihbes the paving as made of plank, built in sections 12 feet long and 8 feet wide, and hauled by wagonE to the points where it is needed. This unused thoroughfare extends six miles across a portion of the desert lying between Yuma, Ariz., and IHoltville, Cal. The plank sections are built on 4 by 6-Inch stringers. 'Ihe units are hound together biy Iron strips placed over rows of spikes, one either side and one along the center of the road. itoundheaded bolts run ning through the planks and stringers are used to hold the strips down. The latter, in addition to joining the units together, keep the spikes from working out of the iumner. Bird Commuters. Thrushes, finches and buntings are the most stylish birds of Washington and Oregon, where they aim to spend the winter, but are forced frequently to take week-end trips to California it the weather grows too severe, says the Indianapolis News. Bright moon lit nights are always chosen for these temporary migrations, and as soon as the weather modifies the birds return to their chosen North, even though anoCther trip may sooa he neessary.
