W. O. W CHIEF SENDS CRITIC,
BARRET AIDE, MESSAGE OF REBUKE
(New Oreans States.)
Despite the declaration several
days ago, of Ben J. Morath, consul
commander of Oleander Camp Noc
74, W. 0. W., that he and other
Woodmen of the World placed the
poster there, Barret supporters a'e
continuing their efforts to make
political capital ot the finding of a
Pleasant campaign poster in the
Jefferson parish hall which was
raided last week by the militia.
A. J. Frantz, Barret campaign
manager, gave to the governor's
afternoon paper Saturday a copy
of a letter which he said he receiv
ed from W. A. Mabry, a Woodmen
of the World. of Shreveport. Mr.
Mabry's letter states simply that he
read in the Shreveport Times that
Orleans Woodmen of the World
had assumed resoonsibility for the
poster's prence in the hall, and adds
the information that the Woodmen
of the World, a fraternal organiza
tion, does not take official part in
politics.
Although the letter says nothing
of the sort, the afternoon newspa
per published it under this headline:
"Woodmen Do Not Act As Posters
of Political Photos Says One Lead
er."
The letter follows:
"A. J. Frantz, Sec. Barret Cam
paign, care St. Charles Hotel,
New Orleans, La,:
"Dear Sir-T he morning
Shreveport Times contains big
headlines stating, "Picture plac
ed inJeffers'n parish placed by
Woodmen," which might create
the impression that the Wood
men of the World of Louisiana
is a political organization, and
as such is supporting Col. Pleas
ant. I am a member of this
order and have been for sever
al years, have served my camp
as consul commander and re
presented same at the head
convention; am familiar with
the constitution of the order,
and I know that politics is not
permitted or regarded by the
order. It has nothing to do
wih politics and does not in
dorse candidates for office be
cause they happen to be mem
bers of the order If this were
true, no doubt many of the
camps would indorse Hon. T. C.
Barret, who has been a mem
ber of the order for more tlhan
twelve years, as well as a few
who might indorse Col. Pleasant
who has been a member, so I
understand, about six months.
"The great Order of Woodmen
of the World is fraternal and
beneficial insurance association,
and stands fdr the highest
ideals and all that is moral, good
and true, an I feel confident if
our great order was called upon
to take a stand on political is
sues in any campaign that there
would be no question but that
it would stand solidily upon the
moral side."
"Yours truly,
(Signed) "W. A. MABRY."
Ben J. Morath, who placed the
poster in the hall and who is one of
the most prominent Woodmen in
the state, made the following state
ment Saturday night to The Daily
States:
"In Saturday afternoon's Item
appears a letter addressed to
Mr. Barret's campaign manager
from Hon. W. A. Mabry, of
Shreveport, in which he seeks
to justify the Item's exploita
tion of the finding of Col Pleas

the militia in Jefferson perish.
I have sent the following tele.
gram, which is self-dlanatoty,
to Mr. Mabry:

used for social gatherines by
Woodmen and the ladies of the
Woodmen Circle, also by the
Maccabees, the Druids and
other wellknown fraternal and

you resent this hall being chbar
