MANY GUARDSMEN
TAKE FRENCH LEAVE
Militiamen Complain Of
Long Ilikes Forced on
Them
Hattiesburg, Miss. Oct. 11. Dis
gusted with the alleged inhumane
treatment accorded them on the
long hikes to which they are sub
jected and declaring that they would
rather be living deserters than dead
well-trained soldiers, many---some
persons say 200 or 300---of the
Mississippi Militiamen, in camp at
Jackson for the last several months
have taken "French leave" and have
scattered to the four corners of the
earth.
Fifty or more members of Co. G,
the Hattiesburg organization came
back home yesterday afternoon and
last night, by direct or circuitous
ways. Reports from the mobiliza.
tion camp at the State capital are
to the effects that more than two
thirds of the men of Co. G ran away
and declared that they will not re
turn.
The first indication of such trouble
in Jackson came here yesterday by
the receipt of a telegram from' the
adjutant general of the State militia
asking him to arrest every militia
man found in Forrest county. This
was followed by a similar telegram
from captain E. Cooper, Co. G's com
mander.
TRAVEL ON FREIGHT
A few hours later, begrimed and
greasy militiamen began tumbling
from nearly ever freight train com
ing to Hattiesburg regardless of what
direction. Through the day and
night, this number increased. It is
believed that at least half a hun
dred Hattiesburg militiamen are
here today on "French leave."
Sheriff Harbison said this after
noon he would not arrest the mili
tiamen now.
"I am notifying every one of
them," he said, "that they have been
ordered back to Jackson. When
this work is finished, I'll notify the
adjutant general and then await
further instructions. I hope the men
will return to Jackson without. my
having to arrest them."
While there have been many de
serters from nearly all the com
panies in Jackson it is said that G
company lost more men than any
other organization.
