The first lesson for this year marks
the Introduction of The Imnproved Uni
form series of International Sunday
School Lessons. This series has grown
out of several years of frank discu
sion and the presentation of manlly pro
posed lesson schemes. It is an effort
to conserve the benefits of the uni
form system of lessons with the desire
to adapt the lessons as thoroughly
as possible to the modern pedagogical
Idea of graded Instruction for the vari
ous departments of the schooll: an
attempt to provide for the whole school
as thorough and as teachable a uni
form lesson idea as possihle.
Special topics and spelal memory
verses and addltional scTiptural ma
terial have beten designnt.ed wherever
It has been deemed ipossible whereby
to make the lessons lore helpful to
the pupils of different departments.
It Is the beginning of an eight-year
cycle, chosen with the view first, of
i ncrjortilng several short topical
courses in addition to the usual series
on the clhronologlcal basis, and see
ond the conmmittee had In mind the
destrability of more frequent survey
of the entire Bible with varying meth
ods of npproach than is possible under
a six-years cycle. Finally, to har
monlze In the period of the cycle the
newly adopted quadrennial conven
thions of the International Sunday
School association. Where no topic,
memory verse or additional material
is Indicated for inter-departments of
schools, it Is intended that uniform
material should be employed for such
departments.
Occasionally the general title and
lesson may be found to be more help
ful than the special topics or addi
tional material as indicated for a giv
en department. Sunday school lead
era frankly acknowledge that this new
plan is an experiment. It is hoped,
however, that the long continued con
trveoalog over. ra4d lesmmsa., eia
alrvest; thtrdorte, It makes no refer
ence whatever to his genealogy. The
key-word to this gospel is the word
"straightway," which Is saed more
than forty times, and it is a sugges
tlon as regards the obedience of a
servant.
I. Introduction (vv. 1-3). The be
ginning of the gospel is meant the
beginning of the blessed story qs told
by the evangelist, Mark. Note It is a
fulfilment of prophecy (Mal. 3:1; Isa.
00:8). Mark is here more particular
ly referring to Isaiah. This is the
period in the life of Chtlst between
hti temple experience and the day of
his gptism, when he first entered
,publicaig into the real history of
Israel. Jeys must needs nave a her
aid, even as .an earthly king is an.
nounced before his arrival. Christ
himself is the living word (John 1:1),
though the voice which announces him
ia the voice of a man-John the Bap
tizer. The baptism of John was unt,
repentance and the remission of sins,
It must not be confused with Christian
baptism. Some interesting questiona
arise as to the life of Jesus beftore
this event-his religious habits (Luke
4:16); his attitude toward the word
of God and its prophecies (Luke 4:17
l1); the work he had been doing in
(azejeth (Mark 6:3).
il. The Baptizer. (v. 4-9). To
anew what kind of a man John wias,
.we must look up Mark 1:6 and Matti.
8:4. HiLs religious convictions are in
terestling also. They were a matter
of his heart (Luke 3:8), a thing of
his daily life (Luke R:10). He was a
man who held to a strict moral stand
ard (Mark 6:18). His method and his
message were a protest and a warn
ing as well as a preparation. Repent
:ance is not remission of sin (I John
1:9). John demanded "fruit" which
*eplld acconmlhlany repentance (Matt
*:. 1). His message was not nan
4ioal but Individual and his sugges
loa (Matt. 3:10-12) of future punish
meat for wrong-doine is only exceeded
by the words of our Lord himself.
iII. The IBaptlm (vv. 10, 11). Bap
tIsm is always an emblem, a symbol.
(See Matt. 8:11; Luke 8:6; Mark 1:8;
Rom, 6:4.) It is a public identifica
flaon, a pubile consecration and confes
Iaon of tath. Jesus Christ himself
took the place of sners (lI Cor.
S 131),
While this loes is aI leson of the
boald who preceded our Lord, who
ase to prepare the way and to usher
Ia hi. kingdom, still there is the other
aIde wMlcb we cannot forget, and in
teaching this lesson we most empha

Those who are aflieted with stomseh
