DIlLLING STARTEDI
By the Martin O1l Conlmta y
Last Wetlnewday Evening.
Due solely to the persistent
efforts of Assessor Martin La
fayette can boast of a prospec
tive oil field. Mr. Martin's faith
in the oil possibilities of this
section has been of the kind that
moves mountains. While most
of our citizens had ceased to
take an active interest in the
development of the local oil
lands, Mr. Martin worked with
a zeal that overcame all obstacles
' and resulted in the organization
of a company which is now oper
l ating within a mile of this town.
I- The Martin Oil Company, of
1I which Mr. Martin is the promo
a ter, began to drill yesterday.
The company has the means and
equipments necessary for a
;. thorough exploitation of the
field. The drilling is in charge
of a competent oil man, Mr.
Scott Clay, and the work will be
prosecuted without delay. This
enterprise is of the greatest im
portance to this whole section,
but this town, is, for many rea
sons, particularly interested in
its success.
There has been a great deal of
talk, but the: credit for making
the practical move to develop
what may be properly called the
Lafayette oil field belongs ex
clusively to the Martin Oil Com
pany.

" dress at the graduating exer

public education, dwelling parti
is cularly upon that phase of the
r. question relating to local taxa
ie tion. His experience of several
u- years in the office of the State
auditor has given him access to
a great deal of information con
e cerning the disbursement of
State funds, and he was in a po
r- sition to show that the State has
e appropriated all that it is able to
give toward the maintenance of
: the public schools, and that
e those communities who desire to
improve their educational sys
tems must do so through local
taxation. After urging his
hearers to adopt the special tax
d method, Mr. Guilbeau paid quite
a handsome compliment to the
parish of Lafayette for what it
has already done and for what it
9 proposes to do on the 18th of (
t this month. Lafayette is being
e complimented on all sides upon
f the very enlightened manner in
- which it is dealing with this C
1 greatest of all public questions.
This is one more reason why the '
tax should be voted on the l8th
instant.

3Mexican Weevils.
.These very troublesome little
insects have made their appear

bers and are already at work
destroying the corn and cane
plants. Mr. John Whittington
has brought to this office several
stalks of corn infested with
these Mexican weevils, or boll
worms, as they are sometimes
called. Mr. Whittington informs
us that unless something hap
pens to stop this pest, his corn
and cane crops will suffer very
t much, and from what he is able
to learn the same thing can be
said of the neighboring farms.
It appears that nothing has been
discovered to rid the farmer of
this insect which threatens to do
untold damage.
