Miss Clara Wells went to Alexandria
on Thursday on a shopping tour.
Mr. I. E. McKnight returned from
New Orleans last Saturday night, hav
ing undergone a successful operation
Rev. Thomas J. Upton, a Methodist
preacher well known to many of our
citizens, died at his home in Minden,
La., on October 22.
Mrs. Irene Gahagan Goodwin, of Rus
ton, arrived in Colfax last Sunday, on
a visit to her daughter, Mrs. J. B. Mc
Knight, returning home on Tuesday.
Capt. C. H. Teal and Mrs. Wm. La
Croix went to Alexandria on Wednes
day, and returned home on Thursday,
accompanied by Miss Beatrice Dunn.
A protracted meeting has been in
progress at the Baptist church all this
week, and will probably continue over
Sunday. Rev. Tredway is a fine preach
er, and considerable interest is being
taken in the meeting.
State Superintendent of Public
Schools, T. H. Harris, was in Colfax
on Tuesday night of this week. He
was to have made an address to the
school children that evening, but on
account of getting here so late the
children were dismissed before he came.

Potato and Corn Raisers Now to the
Mr. J. D. Givens, manager of Glenco
plantation, boasts of raising "some po
tatoes" himself this season. He says
three of them will fill a peck measure,
each potato weighing 41 pounds. He
also claims to have raised the brag 10
acre patch of native corn. It was a cut
he planted on the 8th of June, and laid
by about July 8th, and he gathered an
average of 67 bushels to the acre for
the entire ten acres. Mr. Givens says
this was native corn and not Mexican
The many friends of Mrs. R. A.
Strickland feel gratified at her success
in the district court this week, in se
curing a judgment of $20,000 damages
against the railroad company for kill
ing her husband. Also the friends of
Attorney J. B. Roberts are congratu
lating him on his success in behalf of
Mrs. Strickland, he beiug pitted against
two able railroad lawyers in the trial
of the case.

until 6:16 p. m., and main line trains
Nos. 3 and 4 will be held at Minden for
the connection, so every one living

visit the fair and return home same
