RACE GAMBLE SENSATIONS
Baton Rouge, May 22.--Sen
sational disclosures, illustrating
in a startling way the far-reach
ing influence of the commercial
ized race track gamble evil, arc
to be made in the Louisiana Sen
ate when the Butler-Johnson
bill, prohibiting betting in any
form on racing within or with
out the state, comes up for pass
age.
These disclosures, it is said.
will rock the state from the
Arkansas line to the Gulf and
will cause the greatest sensation
the state has ever known in con
nection with the race track
gambling evil.
The member of the senate
who is collecting the informa
tion he will use in presenting an
argument for the passage of the
Butler-Johnson bill, already has
amassed a large amount of sen
sational matter. Daily, it is said,
he is adding to its volume.
It is predicted that when the
bill comes before the senate for
final vote the disclosures, which
this senator will make, will pre
sent such an indictment against
commercialized race track gam
bling that the people of the en
tire state at large, as well as of
New Orleans, will rise in revolt,
and demand of their representa
tives in the legislature that the
race track gamble evil be crush
ed forever in Louisiana.
A poll of the representatives
who remained in Baton Rouge
over the week-end and who
were present in the House cham
ber Monday morning revealed
100 per cent in favor of the But
ler-Johnson bill, and a like num
ber opposed to the Claiborne
bill. The former Bill outlaws
betting at the race tracks alto
gether; the latter legalizes pari
mutuel machines and estab
lishes a tacing commission.
The poll was taken at the sug
gestion of Representative Clark
Hughes of Bossier parish and
the results of it surprised even
the most consistent foe of the s
racing *amble.
