Mr. E J. Hamley has had put down
in front of his block of four handsome

which will add very much to the worth
of his property and make the stores
attractive and city like. Mr. Hamley
has shown a great deal of enterprise
in starting the movement for first class
sidewalks, something the town is very
munch in need of, and now that the
move has been started in this direction,
other property owners will no doubt
follow in the good work inaugurated
by Mr. ilamley.

almost equal to one's self trudging

as to listen to the Judge tell of what
he saw.

Perhaps one of the best vaudeville
shows that bas visited our city in a
year was that of Swallow and Markle's,
given last evening at their floating
palace theatre at the Diamond Jo
landinlg. There was a large audience
Ipresent and to say tIht they were well
eltertiairtd and highly pleased. is put
ting it mild. Every act was good and
Wvorthy of special mention, among the
more prminient being Mrs. Maddernl
in illustrated songs: Dail and Mack.
miusical acts; Owen and Surlei, Dutch
eonniedlans: Griorosou sisters, in
duets and high class Delsartian dances;
MlcOwen's dog commediane; the won
derful Joe Kelley and sisters; the
Lesering children acrobats, performing
some of the most difficult feats per
tormed by the Nelson family. The
orchestra though small was "great,"
and all in all, the thow was one that
can be recommenlded to any one. The
theatre itself is a "gent," being filled
with all the appliances of a lmondern
theatre of the city, such as electric
lights, some four hundred. the outer
lightsbe o red, white and blue around
the rcoilce, producing a very beauti
ful efiet. In the theatre proper are
tit. living rtooms of the actors and ac
tresses, fitted tup with all the comforts
of a modern hotel, also dining roomi
kitchen, etc. The theatre is seated
with comfortable orchestra chairs anid
the parquet. dress o.icle and balcony
with the boxes oni either side of the
stage. Messrs. Swallow and Markle
are gentlemen, and all the people are
refined, and not a word in the whole
entertainment is said that would not
be a credit to McVicker's or the Grand
of Chicago. The people of the towns
down the river don't want to miss it.
-Columbus Republican.
Swallow & Markle's floating palace
will be at Lake Providence on Tues
day next, the 22nd, and as they come
highly recommended, their theatre
should be crowded.
It Happened in a Drug Store.
"One day last winter a lady came to
my drug store antd asked for a brand
oh cough nietlicine that I did not have
in etocik," says Mr. C. R (;raudin, the
po|tulsr druggist of Ottarlro, N. Y
"She was disalipointed anl wanted to
know what cough preparati.ou I could
recomnriendl. I said to her hla.. could
freely rtconlmendC(hanberlain'ti(Couh
Remedy anld tha she could take a bol
tie ol the renieuy anu atter giving it a
fair trial if she did not fiud it worth
the money to bring back the bottle
uand I woutild refund the price paid.
In the course of a day or two the lady
came back in cotipany withl a friend
in tieed of a cough medicine and ad
vised her to buy a bottle of Chamiber
lain's Cough Remedy. I consider that
a very good recolltlnnendation for the
remedy." For sale at J. S. Gueunard's
drug store.
The itdicslions are that Providence
will have a large crowd of people dur
uing the fair. Let ini show strangers
and others all the hospitality that we
cani and make themn feel at honime. It
won't do to be cold and sellish.
First class sidtewalks are a good
thing, and now that the mnove has been
started, we hope it will not be loag
until the etlire lengtth of sidewalk will
be finisbed siand looking as neat as that
just completed by Mr. Hamley.
We had a pleasant call on Monday
from Mr. A. M. Cheeks, advaice
agent for Swallow & Markle's floaling
palace, which he has billed to play here
oun Tuesday evetning nest. We found
Mr. Cheeks a pleasant gentleman.
