New oet for the Bends.
Captain J.J. Powers has added an
other feather to his managerial cap
and is determined to help out the
Belle of the Bends and other boats of
his lines in the upper bends trade. It
will be remembered that quite recent.
ly a steamer by the name or the City
of St. Joseph passed here with a full
load of merchandise sent out by the
Nicbolas Scbarff Grocery Company of
St. Louis for points on the Red and
Ouachita rivers. The City of St. Joe
bas been down the river, put oft her
freight and been gobbled up on the
eam, so to speak, by the Vicksburg
man. Capt. Powers came up from
New Orleans Saturday night, where
he now hangs out most of the time,
sod the fast leaked out Sunday that
hI had bought another boat. Capt.
PoWs was seen last night and stated
inistly to aquestiou that be felt it
was due to his patrons and well wish
era Ia the bends and elsewhere that he
take some steps to improve the river
service. 'he City of St. Joseph is a
fine, trim little boat, not yet a year
old by a long way, 176 feet long, 36 1-2
feetbeaw and.7 feet depth of hole, and
was built at one of the upper Missis
sippi points, in fact at Dubuque, Iowa.
'I'bs boat is about the size of the
Ruth, possibly a trifle larger, and is
well equipped, having also flie boiler
and engine power. She will be put iu
the Vicksburg and Greenville trade as
an auxiliary to the Belle of the Bends,
and it is believed by her new owner
that she will fill a long felt wrat.
In speaktug of the river subject.
Capt. Powers stated that he had used
every effort to meet the requirements
of the season, but that for one cause
or another, owing to the.ugly or con
trary disposition of river labor, it be
came necessare to take some step, and
having his eye open to the main
t hance, he bought the City of St.
* Joseph.-Vicksburg Herald, 10th.
The Vicksburg- and Greenville Pack
et Company have needed an assistant
* to the faithful Belle of the Bends for
sometime, and the friends of Captain
Powers atid this line, are glad to know
t that they have purchased a new boat.
.t'his line is with us all thertime, and
sbouki be supported in preference to
other boats. The off8cers are first
. class gentlemen, who make it plasant
d for those who travel on their boats.
