Sanford, the great traveller and renowned lecturer and humorist, deliver one of his fa mous lectures. The proceeds are to be devoted to the High School. Col. Sanford also addresses the people of NewTIberia on the 27th and 28th, the occasion of the meeting of the Louis iana State Public School Teachers' Association, being engaged by them because of his exalted reputation in the lecture field. Everyone should attend, and thereby lend their assis tance to this worthy cause, and at the same time enjoy an intellectual treat that is very seldom accorded a couqtry town. WATERWORKS. There is considerable discussion over the subject of waterworks for our town. Mr. W. L. Covel, of Biloxi, Misss., agent for a company engaged in putting up plants of the kind, was here several dlays this week. He proposes to put in a sys tem and furnish an abundance of water to our town, the town to, pay at the rate of $50 annually for each plug or hydrant. He proposes to do this if the corporation will transfer the franchise to himi for 25 years. There was a meeting of citizens at the court house last Monday evening called by the town council to hear the proposition and give some ex pression upon the subject in order that the council might know the sentiments of the tax-payers on the subject. The meeting was a small one but seemed to be strongly in favor of establishing water works. If the scheme is practicable, and it seems to be, it would be of very great benefit to the people of the town, not only as a precaution against fires. but insurance wouldl be much reduced, which is now at an exorbitant rate, and the daily water ing of our streets would add greatly to the health and comfort of our citizens in the hot dusty months of the summer and fall. While these advantages strongly recommend the project, our town council should exercise great judg ment and care in contracting, as the matter is of great importance and the franchise will be grante(l necessarily for a long term of years. Let the council receive all bids, consider them maturely, and then act prompt ly and wisely in the premises. Since the above was put in type. the town council held a special ses sion and has contracted with the gen tleman for the system, granting the franchise, the town to take twenty plugs at the price mentioned. The proceedings and contract will appear next week. We congratulate the council upon its action, and felicitate our people upon the much needed fire protection they have at last secured. The Acadia Advocate is the title of a new paper just started at Church Point, Acadia parish, by Mr. T. C. Lewis, formerly editor of the Homne Advocate, published at Farmerville. Union parish. It is a neat six-col limn folio, is ably edited and :n nounces its intention to labor stren uously for the upbuilding of its town and parish- The people of Church Point should assist it generously in its laudable undertaking. Wie eŽ.hange w.ith pleasure, and wish Bro. Lewis abundant success. At the request of the town council the La. State Agricultural Society will hold its eighth annual session here on the 24th, 25th and 26th of January, 1894. A number of our prominent planters will be assigned subjects for discussion on the programme, which we will publish as soon as given out. It is now in order for the council to lose no time in making all necessary arrangements for the entertainment and comfort of the members to the end that their welcome may be thor oughly and essentially an Opelousas one. Fresh fish, crabs, oysters, etc., always on hand at M. Vilaseca's restaurant. s lttf The Opera House was packed to its utmost by a representative and ap preciative, audience last Saturday night, attracted there by the appear anee of the celebrated cornet soloist, Jules"'Levy. Neither were they dis apl)ofnted in the entertainment, for it was the grandest feast ever enjoyed by our people. Levy is great, and has :honestly won his world-wide reputation as a master of the cornet. The entire company are star per formers, giving him a very strong support, and . making it second to no other on the road.
