" Read's Bri4ge school. May 6th. I am only a little school boy, but as I am a subscriber to the CLA RXoN I hope my piece will be pub lished. My father takes the paper for me, and we have to read it in the school. The teacher says, it is not only necessary to study Ancient His tory, we must also study the his tory of the day, and for that we must go to the newspaper. The superintendent of public ed ucation, Hon. W. S. Frazee, came to the school'last Friday. We had been looking anxiously for him, but when we saw him we were frightened. One boy said he was afraid that the president would hear his heart beating; it beat so loud;pother one told us that his ~aAn trembled so he could not make his ciphers well. Now we would not be afraid of him, and would be glad for him to come every Friday. The scholars who were at the instruction for the Catechism will be frightened, though. The first communion will take place Thursday, the 9th inst. Two sad accidents happened last week. At a ball in Mamou, two young men were quarreling; they drew their pistols and fired, they missed each other, but shot. a little boy Pght years old, who was in the room, and wounded him mortally. The tfglgy'.s name is Maeialy. In this neighborhood, two men were wrestling last Friday; one fell, and got his neck badly hurt, and itnow very ill, his name is Schneegans. It was all done in fan, but the poor man may be a cripple for life. The season is very good for the working of the crop. Some of the farmers, who were well prepared, have already flooded their rice. The prospect is very fine, so far. Hoping to see my name in print, next Saturday, I am Very respectfully, LOUIS SAVOIE. Nielville. May 6th. Dr. Oden, of Bayou Current, was In town yesterday. Mr. J. E. Church and wife, and Mrs. M. C. Payton, made a short trip to New Orleans last week. The two o'clock passenger train ran over Mr. Babers' foot one day last week and mashed it pretty badly, is now improving under the treatment of Dr. G. R. Tolson. Mr. Hill is having his house re modeled and an addition attached, itwill be almost a new house when finished. The new residence of Mr. J. E. Church is completed and he has moved into it. Dr. Tolson's new kitchen and dinning room are being put up, I believe he is also going to have an addition to his dwelling. Mr. S. H. Butter is painting his new house. The back part of town looks almost like another place since so much fencing and whitewashing ;has been done. 'he greater part of the shade trees set out in the school house yard are growing, About three weeks ago a great excitement was raised about rob bers, several houses were entered and others tried-two watches and some little change was taken. Two or three negroes were taken up on suspicion, one made leave town, others turned loose. Town was guarded several nights, but every thing is now thought to be at an end. All vegetation is thriving under t~he present beautiful weather. Spring vegetables are plentiful, and crops doing well. CELE5TINE. Big Case, May 7th. Although we have not celebrated a May day by crowning a "Queen of th asy," yet we have had the urprism of Dr. V. C. Reynolds bringng with him when he re turned tram Opelousas last Friday, a bride, whomour vilagers heartily welcomed as queen of his home. It was not generaUy known that he had such intentions when he left here. Since their choice has been this floral month for theirwedding it is the wish of their friends here that flowers may bedeck their paths and true happiness be their lot. The faeeitg at the Methodist .churc eounu.nced last Friday a.glt. Services were conducted by 8gev. J. B. Kent, of Chicot, until uuaday night, since than Rev. R. W. Tucker has been preaching, Dr. S. P. Ward, Superintaoaent i af the Sunday School at thil cy.PO b, left yesterday accompanied by his wife for Lake Charles to at tend the Y84!4ay School Conven tion. Mr. C. W. Havagd and wife, left yesterday to spend a ftw days in the Crescent city. Miss Minnie Lawrence, of Pilte ville, is visiting the family of Sen ator Ward. On her return from Lecomipte, Mrs. J. N. Oden spent a day or two with Mrs. M. J. Richard last week. Mr. N. M. Richard has returned from a recent trip to. Bayou Cur rent. The light shower that fell here .yesterday was the first within a week, and a good rain is now fall Jag which will be very refreshing. R. M. Ville Platte. May 8tih. Marshall, Mr. Jno. D. Carrie's iittle boy, is dangerously ill. A good rain fell here yeserday- Just enough. Hope it will not rain again for a few days. Picnics have -.maenced in our, What has bete..e. o abo? Mitchell, the Baptist divine of Mamou, held divine ser vice at the Baptist church in Chi cot on April 27th at 11 a. m., and r again at night. After Bro. H. L. Erlich's dainty confectionery in the Courier con cerning the correspondent of the CLARION in reference to his leav ing Sledgeville and becoming a citizen of New Town, it is moved that he locates in New Town if he wishes. Who'll second the move? Mr. Whartoin received a strong support for the vacant United States Marshalship, but we see from a dispatch from Washington City that J. M. Martin has capt ured the coveted prize. The business outlook is becom ing brighter and brighter and the people are becoming more content ed and happy. Whatever mistakes Governor M. J. Foster may have made the sum total of his career as a moral and political reformer is worthy of un stinted praise. He is a gentleman of unquestioned reputation, and will be the coming man to lead the Democratic hosts to victory in 1896. Your scribe had the pleasure of visiting Opelousas on May 3d and remained over night and visited the lawn party given by the young people of the town, and being a stranger to nearly every one we had hut little. "gab" with any ( f the spectators on that occasion. But permit me to say for the bene fit of the lady that said I looked like a Baptist preacher that I am not the Majestic tree-only a branch. VORTEX. Leonville, Mr. Edmond Oster gave an en joyable party in honor of his twen ty second birthday, at the resi dence of Mr. Andre Mallet, on Sun day night. Quito a crowd of young people were present, and from the bright, smiling faces of the young ladies, we need not ask if they en joyed it. The young gentlemen seemed gayer than usual. After dancing a while refresh ments were served. The music was beautiful. Much credit is due to Messrs. Oster and Adlas Mallet in regard to the good management of the dances; they tried to please all and succeeded. A. C. Proceedings of Board ofPolice. OPELOUsAs, May 6, 1895 Members present: C. J.
