Jan. 9-Hello! Happy New Year to all. Have you got rid of your headache? I 'Twas awful, wasn't it, brother? t The Rock Island Civil Engnieers a have moved to Chicot, and are all oc cupying a house belonging to Mrs. A. 11 Moore. ii H. L. Erlich, Esq., attended smeet ing of the school board at Opelousas h last Saturday. An elaborate affair was given at y the hospitable residense of Mrs. Rev. Thomason on last Monday. It was .i called a "Hen Party," and quite a s, crowd attended: Mrs. Thomason was c the recipient of a number of hens, be- n sides other gifts. t) Miss Lyons and Miss Cox, two young ladies from the Bayou Chicot A Lumber Co., after spending the holi- tc days at home, have returned to school at San Antonio, Texas. is While candidates for Governor and n' Lieutenant-Governor are bobbing up in di numerous sections of the Statedon't m forget that Little Bob Broussard, of Iberia, sad Hon. James J.Bailey, of St. W iLndry, are going to make it warm r V _ iIL -1- _-.-..- _t for their opponents. Dr.J. E. klawkins and Dr. Geo. Buchee paid Oakdale a visit last Thursday. To 'the gratifcation of.all concern id, our popular school teacher, Miss Lillian Daniels has returned, and is at her post of duty. Mrs. H. L. Erlich has peas and iish potatoes fully matured in her garden, besides numerous other veg etables that are rarely grown here during' the winter months. S Railroad men, tie men, hardwood men,, stave men, etc., are seen on our streets nearly every day, attending to their variousaduties. Charlie Chappelle, who at present is engaged in estimating timber, says that he heard quite a racket in the woods one day last week, and running to see what it was, met the sight of an immense eagle engaged in a fierce battle with a wild turkey. Capt. Sam Haas, with the excep tion of a very few days, has been absent from home nearly all the fall and winter. Major Frank Wharton and Mr. C. hi. Richards, of Gold Dust, visited Chicot last week. Farmers are already preparing to make the crop of 1907, and from what I can learn, a greater quantity of fertilizer will be used this year than ever was before. Mr. Elmus Campbell, a prominent citizen of the western portion of the parish, gave us a bright and early call on Friday morning. Jake, of Ville Platte,. here is to you and your coming little city. CHICOT. Cabbage-ad lester. Mr. J. J. Mistrot, who conducts a truck farm on the eastern limits of the corporation of Opelosas-at the old "White Hall" place-sent us a specimen of his cabbage prop on last Tuesday, and at the risk of having our veracity questioned, we will give the dimensions and weight, which waa torty-four inches around the waist in the former and twenty pounds in weight! It was a monstrous king of the cabbage tribe, white and firm and when cooked tender and deliciously flavored. The young man who brought it told : us that Mr. Mistrot planted two acres in c4age, on which he made h4000 ead, and that the specimen brought to us was no exception to the general ru ofhe crop. He has of 8000 head on the local 0 sad is not at all worried n I~ii the other 1000 remainig on h bands.
